Mission and Program Overview

Mission

1951 Coffee Company (1951) is a non-profit organization seeking to promote the wellbeing of the refugee community by providing job training and employment to refugees while educating the surrounding community about refugee life and issues. 1951 Coffees name derives from the 1951 Refugee Convention where the United Nations (UN) defined and set forth its first guidelines for the protection of refugees. These guidelines were further expanded in the 1967 Refugee Protocols, giving the UN a global mandate. 1951 Coffee Company was founded in 2015 in the spirit of these conventions to give refugees assistance in starting their new lives through opportunities in the rapidly expanding coffee industry. This is accomplished through a barista training program that provides immediately marketable job skills for 100 refugees a year (75 in Oakland and 25 in San Diego) and through employment for 18 refugees annually at 1951s two brick and mortar coffee shops located in Berkeley, CA.

1951 Coffee Company has two main programs. It facilitates a Barista Training Program that helps 40 refugees/asylees annually develop new job skills and also provides employment at the 1951 Coffee Shop, a nonprofit specialty caf.

IRS990/Desc0Barista Training Program1951s Barista Training Program will begin in January 2016, and will provide refugee specific adjustment assistance that will empower trainees to become successful American employees. Most companies offering entry level positions utilize limited on the job training, where the pressure to perform is immediate and training takes place in front of demanding customers. Refugees often end up struggling in these positions, as the challenge to concurrently expand English language skills, adjust to customer interactions across cultures, and acquire new skills is difficult to manage with an employer that is not empathetic. Activities in 2015 consisted of curriculum development, which will utilize the Specialty Coffee Association of America protocols (SCAA) and best practices from cross cultural workforce readiness training programs. 1951 plans to provide the training to up to 40 refugee participants in 2016 who will graduate from the program with skills that are immediately usable at any specialty caf, restaurant, or coffee shop. Classes will be held at Regeneration Church in Oakland, CA, which is in close proximity to public transportation and to where the majority of refugees live in the East Bay.

Activities in 2015 included securing a location, preparing to submit for a City of Berkeley change in use permit, and working with an architect and design firm to plan out leaseholder improvements and company branding/advocacy.These efforts resulted in the following: A 1,175 square feet space has been secured in downtown Berkeley, CA on Channing Way between Telegraph Avenue and Dana Street. The space is a street-front location that is owned by the First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley and being rented to 1951 Coffee. The Coffee Shop plans to employ 10 to 15 refugees in 2017 to run the coffee shop at this location. 1951s efforts in aesthetics and branding will allow the 1951 Coffee Shop to serve as an intersection of the refugee community and general public in a common space. To create a meaningful experience that engages 1951 Coffee customers through great coffee and respectful advocacy, we have partnered with the creative team at Montaag to collaborate on an interior that will reveal itself on multiple levels over multiple visits. Montaag creates insightful, functional and, perhaps, unorthodox design solutions that add value and distinction, and ultimately, sharpen their clients competitive edge. All aspects of the caf, its products, and dcor will be used to communicate ways for the resettlement community to become a more welcoming community for refugees. The walls will be a canvas of information, charts, and photos. Some installations will be permanent and others will change as information changes. Future plans include refugee-generated pieces that share their stories, dreams, and thoughts. 1951 will invite community groups, resettlement agencies, and other area nonprofits to host refugee-related events in the cafs space. This can include board meetings, intern/employee interviews, fundraisers, movie screenings, and author discussions.
