| ICON TALKS EVENT/ICON EXPERIENCE THE ICON TO ICAN CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION OFFERS CHILDREN WHO ARE DISADVANTAGED AND DISABLED THE CHANCE TO MEET AND SPEND TIME WITH THEIR ICON. ICON TO ICAN COORDINATES, FUNDS AND FACILITATES THE MEETING BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THAT PROVIDING A PLATFORM FOR SUFFERING CHILDREN TO MEET THEIR ICON PROVIDES THEM WITH SIGNIFICANT MOTIVATION, ENCOURAGEMENT AND INSPIRATION THAT THEY CAN OVERCOME THEIR CURRENT SITUATION AND ALSO BE AN ICON TO OTHERS. MEETING THEIR ICON NOT ONLY UPLIFTS AND IMPROVES THE MORALE AND OUTLOOK OF CHILDREN DEALING WITH SEVERE ILLNESS AND DISABILITIES BUT IT MAKES THEIR LIVES BETTER. THE ICON TALKS EVENT WAS HELD ON JANUARY 28, 2016, AND WAS OUR PREMIER EVENT FOR THE YEAR. THE EVENT FEATURED GRAMMY AWARD WINNING ARTIST CHAKA KHAN DOING BOTH AN INTERVIEW AND A PERFORMANCE AND WAS OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY. THROUGH COLLABORATIONS AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS, WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE 100 CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET THE LEGENDARY CHAKA KHAN IN A RECEPTION BEFORE THE EVENT, WHERE THEY HAD A CHANCE TO INTERACT WITH HER, ASK QUESTIONS, AND ENJOY THE MOMENT. THE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WERE GIVEN PREMIUM SEATING AND WERE PART OF THE FOCUS OF HER TALK, ENTITLED, "FROM SUCCESS TO SIGNIFICANCE". MRS. KHAN DISCUSSED HER PATH TO SUCCESS AND HER INSPIRATIONAL STORY, HIGHLIGHTING THE MESSAGE THAT ANYONE CAN OVERCOME CHALLENGES TO ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS. OUR CHILDREN ATTENDEES CAME FROM ACROSS THE SPECTRUM, FROM CHILDREN BATTLING CANCER, TO THOSE LIVING IN CHILDREN'S SHELTERS, TO CHILDREN IN AN ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED AREA WHO WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THIS OPPORTUNITY OTHERWISE. OUR PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS WERE THE FERRARI KID, MLK ACADEMY MIDDLE SCHOOL, GIRLS INC OF SAN ANTONIO , ST. PJ'S HOME, ROY MOSS CHILDREN'S SHELTER, WW WHITE ALL STAR KIDS, AND THE BATTERED WOMEN'S SHELTER OF SAN ANTONIO. WE HONORED COMMUNITY ICONS, DR. IANA BURNS MD, MARTA PELEAZ, OF THE BATTERED WOMEN'S SHELTER, AND JANE MACON ATTORNEY AND COMMUNITY LEADER. ON JUNE 30, 2016, ICON TALKS HELD AN EVENT IN WASHINGTON, DC AT THE MEAD CENTER FOR AMERICAN THEATRE WITH ACTOR, ACTIVIST, POET AND STAR OF THE STARZ HIT SHOW "POWER", OMARI HARDWICK. THE EVENT WAS ATTENDED BY OVER 700 YOUTH, PARENTS AND PROFESSIONALS FROM THE DC AREA. DURING THE EVENT, HARDWICK ENGAGED IN AN ON STAGE CONVERSATION ON THE MESSAGE OF "EMBRACING THE POWER IN YOU." HARDWICK'S STORY WAS TRULY A COMPELLING TESTIMONY OF PERSEVERANCE. HIS LIFE LESSONS INCLUDED THE RISE AND FALL OF HIS PROFESSIONAL ATHLETIC CAREER, THE HUMILITY OF HOMELESSNESS AND THE PROVERBIAL HOLLYWOOD STORY OF THE STRUGGLING ACTOR LIVING OUT OF HIS CAR. DESPITE THESE HURDLES, HARDWICK PERSEVERED PURSUING HIS ORIGINAL LOVE FOR THE ARTS AND ACTING. THE AUDIENCE RECEIVED AN OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN INSIGHT OF THE INTIMATE DETAILS OF THIS VOYAGE. FOLLOWING THE ON STAGE DISCUSSION, HARDWICK SHARED HIS ARTISTIC LOVE DELIVERING AN EMOTIONAL PERFORMANCE OF HIS ORIGINAL SONNETS IN SPOKEN WORD POETRY ACCOMPANIED BY LIVE INSTRUMENTS AND PERFORMERS. THE EVENT ALSO INCLUDED A PERFORMANCE BY LOCAL YOUTH FROM THE DUKE ELLINGTON SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS AND RECORDING ARTIST TULANI. DURING THE EVENT, ICON TALKS ALSO HONORED RADIO ONE FOUNDER & CEO CATHY HUGHES AND CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST, REV. JESSE JACKSON, JR. | $0 | $10,097 |
| ICON MENTORSHIP PROGRAM Icon to Ican Charitable Organization established a mentoring program at Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, an elementary and middle school in one of San Antonio's most economically disadvantaged school districts. These children face many challenges at home and school, and our program was aimed at the premise that exposure to local ICONs and mentors can enrich the students and engage them in The larger world beyond their current circumstances. The primary foci of the program were education and life skills, coping mechanisms, resources, and leadership development. Our mentors come from all walks of life and include, doctors, lawyers, Judges, the San Antonio Police Chief, nurses, Retired NBA hall of fame athletes, WNBA and NFL players. Our goal was to provide exposure to Icons from a diverse spectrum, to introduce the kids to different career pathways. More importantly, our students learned that everyone has faced challenges and adversity. With hard work, determination and belief in oneself, anything is possible. Haircuts are provided to all who want to attend; no one is ever turned away. oftentimes the homeless community lacks the resources to do simple grooming activities. The program helps restore basic dignity and a connection through touch and caring and conversation. Our volunteers are barbers and stylists, and other individuals who want to help, talking, encouraging, performing music, singing, and engaging the homeless participants. This program is possible through a partnership with Corazon Ministries at Travis Park Church and is part of a larger collaborative that includes meals for the homeless, a free medical and dental clinic, arts and crafts, and ministry.
