The foundation engages in activities to support and promote finding effective treatments, and ultimately a cure, for dipg brain tumors and other cancers. Dipg is the deadliest form of pediatric brain cancer, with an overall survival of less than 1%. The foundation's primary focus is funding dipg brain cancer research. The foundation seeks to increase funding for research, clinical studies, and other programs designed to find effective treatments, and ultimately a cure, for dipg and other cancers. The Foundation makes grants through a process that includes review of formal grant applications for medical research. The applications are expected to include details on the investigator, institution, research proposal, and budget. Grant recipients will be required to comply with written terms governing the grant, including the timing of implementation, reporting on progress, and use of funds only for the purposes outlined in the grant. In 2016, the Foundation determined to fund research in partnership with other nonprofit foundations in the DIPG Collaborative, which is organized by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called The Cure Starts Now Foundation, Inc. The DIPG Collaborative considers research proposals through an initial review by Medical Advisory Committee for The Cure Starts Now Foundation for scientific merit, a ranking of applications by that Medical Advisory Committee, and then consideration and vote by the DIPG Collaborative Foundational Partners. Investigators who are funded through grants of the DIPG Collaborative must provide progress reports at annual intervals and at the end of the funding period.
