Mission

Brighter Bites is a produce co-op, with an education component, that focuses on underserved communities. The organization builds relationships by engaging schools, communities and other partners to participate in the Brighter Bites program of produce distribution and nutrition education for a fun, healthy food experience.

Brighter Bites' goal is to improve the long-term health outcomes of those they serve.

The Board Chair reviews Form 990 before providing a copy to all board members and filing with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

The conflict of interest policy is distributed annually to the Board, and signatures affirming understanding of the policy are obtained. Responses are collected, and any conflicts are discussed with the Chief Executive Officer and Board Chair and then reported to the entire Board. If the Board considers an issue involving a financial relationship between the organization and a member of the Board, the board member will disclose their financial relationship concerning the issue. The conflicted Board member will refrain from voting on the matter.

The CEO's salary is based on a wage and benefits survey conducted by United Way of Greater Houston. The survey of local nonprofits considers agency size, budget, and responsibilities in its salary assessment. The Board approves the CEO's salary. The CEO approves all other wages. All employees undergo a review by supervisors before being eligible for salary changes.

IRS990/Desc0For eight weeks each in the fall, spring, and summer, Brighter Bites provides 1) Produce Distributions - two bags containing 50 servings (25 lbs) of fresh produce for participants to pick up and take home when they pick up their child at school; 2) Nutrition Education - we train and support teachers in schools, camps, and educational centers to implement evidence-based health nutrition education programs approved for classrooms across the United States. Parents receive weekly educational tools with their bags, including nutrition handbooks, recipes, and tips to demystify produce. All materials are available on the website, and 3) a Food Experience for the whole family, demonstrating colorful recipes, passing out samples that incorporate the week's fresh produce, and discussing healthy eating habits.
