Additional Explanations

Cessation of or significant change to any program service Part III line 3

In mid-March 20202, the building where we were located closed down due to the COVID pandemic and remains closed indefinitely. On October 1, 2020, Lollys Place leased a storefront in University City to use for staff meetings and small group meetings. Once COVID restrictions are lifted, we will resume in-person tutoring at the new location. To continue to meet the academic needs of our students, we reimagined our service delivery. We created an online tutoring program that was piloted over the summer and launched September 14. Students also can connect with their peers in their online learning community. We created an online enrichment library for our students featuring art, cooking, nature, and yoga activities to complement our virtual tutoring.

Part III response or note to any other line in Part III

We serve children who need academic and mentoring suport to supplement classroom education. Students face one or more obstacles: learning disabilities including dyslexia, autism, and ADHD; inadequate educational supports (oten socioeconomic stress at home); or language barriers (English is not their native language). Tutoring is vital to closing their achievement gap.Our goals are to foster a genuine love of learning and to help students achieve academic success. We design lesson plans to strengthen the unique way students learn best and to foster confidence in their ability to be successful in school. Historically, 75% - 80% of students have shown gains of at least two reading levels. We welcome children of all academic abilities, ethnicities, faiths, and socioeconnomic backgrounds. We value diversity and intentionally cultivate a diverse student body, staff, and volunteers. For the 2019-2020 school year, our student population was 40% Black, 30% White, 23% Hispanic, and 7% Multiracial. We reached 126 children from 17 schools. Due to financial needs, approximately 65% of students received scholarships to attend our program. Because of our inclusive philosophy, children meet and interact with tutors and peers who represent a great diversity of backgrounds; leading to enhanced social development and improved scholastic outcomes for students.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1The Board Treasurer reviewed the 990 in detail; each Board Member received the 990 prior to the November Board meeting where any questions were addressed.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2The company has a conflict of interest policy that requires annual disclosures of any potential conflicts of interest. Additionally, procedures are in place to ensure that the board monitors and approves any potential transactions that would represent a conflict of interest without the consideration of the parties involved.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3Compensation of the Executive Director and other top management are reviewed and approved by the board members. In accordance with the conflict of interests policy, non-independent directors are prohibited from being a part of compensation decisions regarding their own pay.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4All governing documents and financial statements are kept on file with the Executive Director and made available to the public upon request.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5In mid-March 20202, the building where we were located closed down due to the COVID pandemic and remains closed indefinitely.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt6We serve children who need academic and mentoring suport to supplement classroom education.
