Form 990 governing body review Part VI line 11

Healing Justices Board of Directors reviews and approves all annual budgets and financial activity (both income and expenditures) on a quarter-annual basis throughout the year. In addition, the Board of Directors reviews and approves the final statementsbvat the end of the year before the preparation of the organizations tax return for that fiscal year. The Executive Director then works with the organizations accountant to complete and file the tax return.

This includes: (1) review of comparable salaries for the same positions at similarly-sized nonprofit organizations in the Washington, DC, region; and (2) adherence to Healing Justices Conflict of Interest Policy and Procedures to ensure that no individual with an actual or apparent conflict of interest participates as a member of the body that reviews and approves employee compensation. The Board of Directors keeps typed minutes of all meetings held and decisions made therein, including decisions relating to staff compensation.

These resources included: practical professional tools for justice officials and service providers; peer-to-peer support videos for crime victims and survivors; and educational materials for the media and general public. These unique resources were the tangible products that resulted from this two-year grant and are hosted on a new public website created with the grant funding: www.survivorservices.org.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0We hosted three national healing retreats for people impacted by wrongful convictions. We covered all costs for people to attend through individual donations from members of the public. Our retreats utilize restorative justice circles, art therapy, and other trauma-recovery activities to enable individual and community healing. Each retreat provides a safe, nurturing, and confidential space for people to come together, speak openly about their trauma and loss, provide support and understanding to one another, and learn tools for rebuilding their individual lives and their communities. We also offered monthly online group healing gatherings for individuals to continue their recovery between retreats.

In 2019, we conducted a variety of education, training, and/or technical assistance to justice officials (police, prosecutors, victim advocates, judges, etc.), service providers, students, and the general public in venues around the country. The goal of these activities was to expand and improve the services and support provided to people harmed by wrongful convictions and to raise awareness about their experiences and needs. All expenses for these programmatic activities were covered by individual donations.

This included the creation of a detailed, 50-page resource catalog for exonerated individuals and their families, entitled Peer-to-Peer: Navigating the Return Home After Exoneration (available at www.healingjusticeproject.org. We also launched the creation of an individual peer support program. Finally, we created a program for responding to individual requests for assistance, such as with physical and mental health care services, employment services, housing services, and other social service needs.
