“Program Service Accomplishments Continued.”

“During the past fiscal year, EcoForesters has been hard at work assisting forestland owners and enhancing forests across western North Carolina. We have performed general forestry consulting work, like providing professional assistance and technical knowledge to forestland owners, to five different forestland owners whose properties are located in three different western North Carolina counties and cover more than 2,200 acres. This includes advising a local fruit and nut community collective to expand an orchard; and advising local forestland owners on managing invasive plants.”

“In addition to general forestry consulting work, we also produced written forest stewardship plans for seven different forestland owners, including the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian trust lands in North Carolina. Together, these properties total more than 52,000 acres across nine different western North Carolina counties. These plans cover a ten-year time frame and detail the approach to sustainably manage these forestlands and ensure their long-term health. Not only do these landowners receive a written course of action to most effectively manage and conserve their forest, in most cases, they also receive significant property tax savings as a result of having a forest stewardship plan created by a professional forester and enrolling in North Carolina's Present Use Valuation tax program.”

“Lastly, EcoForesters also provided timber sale administration services to two different properties in western North Carolina covering more than 3,000 acres. EcoForesters specializes in conducting ecologically sound, socially responsible timber harvests and we were able to help the landowners realize both their financial and stewardship goals. During this process, EcoForesters represents the landowner in establishing a contract that states the terms of payment and how a logger is to engage in stewardship activities (i.e. how trees are to be removed, how trails are to be constructed etc.). Subsequent to this agreement, we oversee the terms of the contract and monitor the performance of the logger to ensure the work is satisfactorily completed. EcoForesters' staff is also sure to be mindful of each individual tree we select for harvesting. Never choosing only the biggest, best and most valuable trees, but choosing a diverse mix of different species, size and vigor to maintain a balanced and diverse forest. This is just one of the many unique approaches EcoForesters takes to engage in positive impact forestry and ensure healthy forests for future generations.”
