Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Outdoor Afros mission is to celebrate and inspire Black connections and leadership in nature. To see more Black people in prominent leadership roles in the conservation movement, in outdoor companies, and in public agencies charged with protecting our natural heritage, Outdoor Afro works to first reconnect specifically Black Americans to the land and nature and to uplift their roles as leaders and stewards of the natural world. From the humble beginning as blog, and entrepreneurial leadership, today, there are observable and measurable changes in outdoor engagement, media representation, and new professional leadership networks among more people of color in the outdoor and conservation-related fields.

IRS990/Desc0Outdoor Afro Leadership Program -Outdoor Afro is now the nation's leading, cutting edge network connecting more than 55,000 people to outdoor recreation opportunities in 56 cities across the nation. We do this by training a cohort of national leaders from diverse backgrounds who help redefine what outdoor leadership is. Outdoor Afro programs lead families in camping, hiking, and paddling experience - many for the first time. Our programs help participants embrace conservation ethics and motivate people to take better care of themselves, our community, and the planet for all living species. This year, we have:Trained over 100 leaders to help connect over 55,000 people to outdoor experiences nationally.Led thousands of joyous events in nature and virtually, all safely during a worldwide pandemic.Sponsor ongoing monthly outdoor recreation and conservation activities for youth and their families in 30 US states.Outdoor Afro Swimmership Program -In partnership with the YMCA and KEEN, Outdoor Afro awarded 150 swim scholarships to children and their families this year, with plans to expand further next year.

To see more Black people in prominent leadership roles in the conservation movement, in outdoor companies, and in public agencies charged with protecting our natural heritage, Outdoor Afro works to first reconnect specifically Black Americans to the land and nature and to uplift their roles as leaders and stewards of the natural world. From the humble beginning as blog, and entrepreneurial leadership, today, there are observable and measurable changes in outdoor engagement, media representation, and new professional leadership networks among more people of color in the outdoor and conservation-related fields.
