Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

Management has concluded that any tax positions that would not meet the more-likely-than-not criterion of Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) Topic 740-10, Accounting for Income Taxes, would be immaterial to the financial statements taken as a whole. Accordingly, the accompanying financial statements do not include any provision for uncertain tax positions, and no related interest or penalties have been recorded in the statement of activities or accrued in the statement of financial position. Federal and state tax returns of the Organization are generally open to examination by the relevant taxing authorities for a period of three years from the date the returns are filed.

IRS990/Desc0FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROGRAMCROSSROADS COMMUNITY SERVICES EXISTS TO NOURISH OUR COMMUNITY'S LOWINCOME FAMILIES BY PROVIDING NUTRITIOUS FOOD, AND SUPPORTIVE EDUCATION. BY DISTRIBUTING SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNTS OF WHOLESOME FOOD, CROSSROADS STRIVES TO MEET THE BASIC FOOD NEEDS OF ALL OUR CLIENTS, WHILE HELPING SUPPLEMENT THEIR HOUSEHOLD INCOMES. OVER THE YEARS, WE HAVE LEARNED THE VALUE OF GIVING MORE FOOD PER PERSON PER VISIT. ON AVERAGE, A FAMILY OF FOUR RECEIVES 100 POUNDS OF GROCERIES, WITH AN ESTIMATED RETAIL VALUE OF $200. MONEY THAT OUR CLIENTS SAVE ON GROCERIES, ALLOWS THEM TO USE MORE OF THEIR HOUSEHOLD INCOME ON OTHER NEEDS SUCH AS HOUSING AND UTILITIES, CAR REPAIRS OR MEDICAL EXPENSES.FOOD INSECURITY, AS DEFINED BY THE USDA, MEANS AN INDIVIDUAL LACKS THE ACCESS TO ENOUGH FOOD TO LIVE AN ACTIVE, HEALTHY LIFE. IN DALLAS COUNTY, ALMOST 20% OF RESIDENTS ARE FOOD INSECURE (APPROXIMATELY 473,800 INDIVIDUALS) ACCORDING TO THE NORTH TEXAS HUNGER CENTER. TO MEET THE HUNGER NEEDS OF AS MANY OF THOSE INDIVIDUALS AS POSSIBLE IN THE MOST EFFICIENT MANNER, CROSSROADS HAS CONSISTENTLY RELIED ON INNOVATION, INFORMED BY RESEARCH AND EXPERIENCE. TO THAT END, IN 2016, CROSSROADS DISTRIBUTED 2.1 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD TO 12,577 UNDUPLICATED INDIVIDUALS THROUGH ITS PANTRY IN DOWNTOWN DALLAS AND THROUGH A NETWORK OF 80 COMMUNITY DISTRIBUTION PARTNERS (CDPS) THROUGHOUT DALLAS COUNTY.CROSSROADS WORKS TO MAKE SOCIALSERVICE FOOD DISTRIBUTION MORE EFFICIENT, EFFECTIVE, EQUITABLE, AND HEALTH PROMOTING. A REGISTERED DIETITIAN WITH THIRTY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE HELPED US DEVELOP THE CROSSROADS NUTRITIONBASED FOOD SELECTION SYSTEM (SYSTEM) - AN ALGORITHM IN OUR CLIENT DATABASE THAT HELPS MATCH THE KINDS AND AMOUNTS OF FOOD RECEIVED TO THE AGE, GENDER, AND ACTIVITY LEVEL OF EACH HOUSEHOLD MEMBER AS RECOMMENDED BY THE 20152020 DIETARY GUIDELINES FOR AMERICANS (DGA).OUR APPROACH IS UNIQUE ACCORDING TO FEEDING AMERICA, THE NATION'S LARGEST DOMESTIC HUNGER RELIEF ORGANIZATION - A POWERFUL AND EFFICIENT NETWORK OF 200 FOOD BANKS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. OUR SYSTEM CALCULATES THE AMOUNTS OF FRUITS, VEGETABLES, PROTEINS, GRAINS, AND DAIRY NEEDED TO PROVIDE THE FOUNDATION FOR THE PREPARATION OF 21 BALANCED MEALS FOR EACH FAMILY MEMBER. USING OUR SYSTEM WITH THE HELP OF AN INTAKE WORKER, CLIENTS CREATE THEIR UNIQUE SHOPPING LIST EACH TIME THEY VISIT. BY MAKING THEIR FOOD CHOICES BASED ON THE DGA, CLIENTS ARE PROMPTED TO SELECT MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AND LESS GRAINS/STARCHES AND PROTEINS.IN ADDITION TO FOCUSING ON EFFICIENCIES AND EFFECTIVENESS IN THE FOOD SELECTION PROCESS, CROSSROADS HAS BEEN AN INNOVATOR IN THE FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROCESS AS WELL. IN 2006 CROSSROADS BEGAN TO PIONEER A HUBANDSPOKE DISTRIBUTION MODEL THAT HAS GREATLY INCREASED THE EFFICIENCY BY WHICH FOOD IS DISTRIBUTED IN DALLAS COUNTY AND BEYOND.OUR COMMUNITY DISTRIBUTION PARTNERS (CDPS) ARE THE SPOKES - A NETWORK OF CHURCHES, COMMUNITY CENTERS, LOWINCOME RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES, DALLAS HOUSING AUTHORITY APARTMENT COMPLEXES, AND NONPROFIT AGENCIES. THESE ORGANIZATIONS WANT TO FEED THEIR NEIGHBORS IN NEED BUT DO NOT HAVE THE CAPACITY OR EXPERTISE TO BECOME FULL FLEDGED FOOD PANTRIES. CROSSROADS HAS THE INFRASTRUCTURE, STAFF, CONSULTING REGISTERED DIETITIAN, AND STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIP WITH THE NORTH TEXAS FOOD BANK (NTFB), SO THAT TOGETHER, WE MAXIMIZE THE USE OF DOLLARS AND EXISTINGCOMMUNITY RESOURCES. WE PURPOSELY CHOSE THIS APPROACH TO FOOD DISTRIBUTION TO GET MORE NUTRITIOUS GROCERIES TO MORE PEOPLE IN THEIR OWN NEIGHBORHOODS IN A VERY EFFICIENT AND COST EFFECTIVE MANNER.BY DESIGN, CDPS ARE LOCATED TO BETTER SERVE THEIR NEIGHBORS WHO ARE ELDERLY, LIVING ON FIXED INCOMES OR DO NOT HAVE TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE TO VISIT OUR PANTRY. THE AVERAGE DISTANCE OUR CDP CLIENTS TRAVEL TO RECEIVE FOOD HAS BEEN REDUCED FROM 15 MILES TO 3.2, SAVING THEM VALUABLE TIME, AS WELL AS MONEY FOR GAS OR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. IN ADDITION, THIS MODEL ALLOWS US TO REACH A GREATER NUMBER OF PEOPLE LIVING IN FOOD DESERTS, AREAS I
