Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 1: Description of Organization Mission:

The Coalition for Public Safety, together with its partners, is the largest national effort working to make our criminal justice system smarter, fairer and more cost effective at the federal, state and local level. In an unprecedented way, the Coalition brings together the nation's most prominent conservative and progressive organizations to pursue an aggressive criminal justice reform effort. The Coalition and its partners reach tens of millions of Americans seeking commonsense reforms, and will work to build consensus around comprehensive efforts that are designed to address some of the most pressing issues facing the nation's criminal justice system. The Coalition is working across the political spectrum to reduce our jail and prison populations and associated costs; end the systemic problems of overcriminalization and overincarceration -- particularly of low-income communities and communities of color; ensure swift and fair outcomes for both the accused and the victim; and make communities safe by reducing recidivism and breaking down barriers faced by those returning home after detention or incarceration. Coalition Goals: Reduce the footprint of jails and prisons by tackling over-criminalization and over incarceration Reinvest cost savings in true public safety measures Address justice disparities in low-income communities and communities of color Break down barriers to re-entry for returning citizens Emphasize effective rehabilitation and treatment Ensure prompt and fair outcomes for both the accused and victim of crimes

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A: Education (continued):

CPS also partnered with other nonprofit organizations to host summits and forums to reach diverse audiences and share information on key criminal justice issues, such as sponsoring Faith and Freedom Coalition's Road to Majority Conference and Young Americans for Liberty's annual YALCON conference. CPS also disseminated criminal justice information through media interviews, informational meetings with high-level media figures and influencers, and employing rapid response tactics for relevant criminal justice events. By providing reporters with access to fact sheets, research documents, and Coalition members and staff, the organization increased criminal justice coverage in print and digital formats. Through social media platforms, the organization highlighted partner organizations working on criminal justice issues and directed followers to relevant breaking news.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4B: Coalition Building / Outreach (continued):

CPS also hosted monthly meetings, which brought together diverse groups to hear presentations by Congressional staff, Administrative officials, leaders of federal agencies, criminal justice experts, and others.
