Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Safe Routes for Seniors:Traffic violence disproportionately affects older adults and people with disabilities: people over 65 are at least 50% of traffic deaths each year despite being 17.5% of the population. Data shows these crashes happen most often in Equity Priority Communities where a high percentage of lower-income seniors, people of color, and non-English speakers reside. Walk SFs Safe Streets for Seniors program is dedicated to keeping older adults active and engaged by creating safe streets. We do this through trainings, walk audits, and mobilize older adults to provide input on policies and projects that impact them.

Part IX, Line 24A

PPP/ERC $23,825:In January 2021, new legislation from the Consolidated Appropriations Act included changes to Employee Retention Credit (ERC) eligibility for recipients of Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans. This favorable change enabled us to take advantage of the ERC, a fully refundable payroll tax credit, even after previously having received PPP funding and loan forgiveness, provided that the payroll identified for the ERC was not paid out of PPP funds. After confirming our eligibility, we accrued for the refund in March 2021, the same quarter that the new legislation took effect. However, after multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact the IRS on our ERC refund payment status, and given the length of time that had elapsed, with the expected credits retroactively pertaining to the first two quarter payroll periods of calendar year 2020, we made the judgment in June 2022 to remove these stale assets from our books. The expected payroll tax credit would have been $11,123 (Jan-Mar 2020 federal tax return) and $12,702 (Apr-Jun 2020 federal tax return), totaling $23,825.

IRS990/Desc0Vision Zero:Walk San Francisco Foundation continued its work as a champion of Vision Zero, the Citys goal to eliminate all severe and fatal traffic injuries in San Francisco by 2024. The Walk SF Foundation led the Vision Zero Coalition of nearly 40 community-based organizations to inform and support the City's efforts to redesign San Francisco's most dangerous streets. We helped strengthen the designs for several specific street projects to improve safety. Much of our work focused specifically on speed management since speeding is the #1 most dangerous driving behavior.

IRS990/MissionDesc0The Walk San Francisco Foundation believes San Francisco should be the most pedestrian-friendly city in the country. Yet, every 15 hours on average in San Francisco, someone is taken to the hospital after being injured in a traffic crash. Walk SF works to improve San Franciscos street safety through policy advocacy, community organizing, and educating residents, city agencies, and elected officials on the need for more pedestrian-friendly streets.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Safe Routes to School:In 2021-2022, Walk San Francisco Foundation continued to work with schools to empower local families and school communities to walk, bike, and take transit to school. In addition, we educated families about traffic safety and organized the school community to support traffic safety engineering and enforcement around schools.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Families for Safe Streets:Walk San Francisco Foundation also organizes the San Francisco Bay Area branch of Families for Safe Streets, a volunteer group of people who have personally survived a severe traffic crash, or whose loved ones have been killed or seriously injured in a crash. Walk San Francisco Foundation helps crash victims with emotional support, as well as education and encouragement to share their personal stories of hurt and loss because no one should face the same devastation that these people have. These people are strong advocates for streets that are designed and enforced in proven ways to protect lives.
