Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Backyard growers cultivates healthy, connected, resilient communities and fights for food sovereignty by empowering people to grow their own food. We increase equitable access to vegetable gardens and the resources people and communities need to grow their own food.

Backyard growers strives to build healthy, connected, resilient communities. We do so through our robust school programming where we operate school gardens, garden programs and taste tests at gloucester's 5 public elementary schools, the public preschool and the middle school. We also operate six community gardens in gloucester and this past year we launched a community-based farmers market in downtown gloucester. We offer a year-round calendar of workshops open to the community as well as food access programs through our farmers market.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

A new farmers market "the backyard growcery" began during the fiscal year. In june 2024, backyard growers hosted a place-based farmer's market, called the backyard growcery, dedicated to creating a platform for food access and community food-growing education, while operating in support of local farms and small food businesses to build a stronger food system, celebrate community and food culture in gloucester.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization, incorporated under chapter 180 of the massachusetts general laws as a tax exempt entity, has been granted tax-exempt status under internal revenue code (irc) section 501(c)(3) and is classified as other than a private foundation as defined by section 509(a) of the irc. Therefore, it is generally exempt from federal and state income taxes. Accordingly, no provision for income taxes has been provided for in the accompanying financial statements. The organization is required by asc 740-10, "accounting for uncertainty in income taxes," to evaluate and disclose tax positions that could have an effect on the organization's financial statements. The organization reports its activities to the internal revenue service and the commonwealth of massachusetts on informational returns that are generally subject to audit and review by the governmental agencies for a period of three years after filing. Substantially all of the organization's income, expenditures and activities relate to its exempt purpose. Therefore, management has determined that the organization is not subject to unrelated business income taxes and will continue to qualify as a tax exempt not-for-profit entity.
