“The organizations revenue and expenditures during the period covered in this filing, July 2020 to June 2021, were significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the strategic shifts made by the organization in response. The organizations program service expenditures were substantially lower than in the prior year because a large portion of those expenses were tied to in-person gatherings, workshops, trainings, etc., including the travel costs of bringing together certain program participants from across the U.S. During FY21, these activities were largely impossible due to the pandemic. Bunker Labs reduced expenses within our fundraising and administrative functions as the pandemic continued, however, a certain baseline was required to keep the operations going and prepare for a return to full-blown programming and in-person events. The relative effect of these reductions in the support areas was, therefore, much smaller compared to the decrease in program delivery costs. After FY21, Bunker Labs program expenses will return to higher levels with the resumption of in-person aspects of the programming and continued growth, while the organization expects fundraising and administrative expenses to increase at a much slower rate relative to growing program expenses due to the efficiencies gained with scale.During the period covered by this filing, the organization also had several changes among staff. This was due to staff of 5+ years tenure choosing to leave to pursue their own businesses or due to strategic shifts in the organizational structure, such as the move away from a regionally based operating model to one organized by programs delivery. For these reasons, the 2020 Form 990 reflects multiple former employees who departed the organization during this period, and due to the pandemic, Bunker Labs was attentive to ensuring these departures did not pose an undue financial burden to these individuals.”
