The form 990 is reviewed by the chair, vice chair, secretary/treasurer, executive director, ex-officio member and school treasurer prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

ROUNDING ADJUSTMENT -2.

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The organization has a committee that oversees the financial statement preparation process and the selection of external cpas. This process has not changed from prior years.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is a not-for-profit organization that is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. The internal revenue service has determined that the organization is not a private foundation within the meaning of section 509(a). The income taxes topic, fasb asc 740, clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an organization's financial statements. Asc 740 requires an organization to disclose the nature of uncertain tax positions taken, if any, when filing its income tax return utilizing a two-step process to recognize and measure any uncertain tax positions taken. The organization recognizes a tax benefit only if it is more likely than not the position would be sustained in a tax examination, with a tax examination being presumed to occur. No tax benefit will be recorded on tax positions not meeting the more likely than not test. Interest and penalties accrued or incurred, if any, as a result of applying asc 740 will be recorded to interest expense and other expense, respectively. Based on its evaluation, the organization has concluded that there are no uncertain tax positions requiring recognition in its financial statements. The organization's evaluation was performed for all federal and state tax periods still subject to examination. The organization's 2014 and 2015 federal and state exempt organization returns remain subject to examination by the irs and state taxing authorities.

IRS990/Desc0OUR COURSE PROGRESSION ALLOWS US TO 'MEET STUDENTS WHERE THEY ARE'. ENROLLING STUDENTS PROVIDE A COPY OF THEIR TRANSCRIPT FROM THE LAST HIGH SCHOOL THEY ATTENDED WHICH ALLOWS US TO DETERMINE HOW MANY CREDITS A STUDENT NEEDS TO COMPLETE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CORE 40 DIPLOMA. EACH STUDENT ALSO SITS FOR SEVERAL ACADEMIC ASSESSMENTS WHICH ARE USED TO DETERMINE APPROPRIATE COURSE PLACEMENT BASED UPON THE STUDENT'S CURRENT KNOWLEDGE OF THE DISCIPLINE. THE MAJORITY OF OUR COURSES ARE FACE-TO-FACE, IN CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION WITH A LICENSED TEACHER WITH AN AVERAGE CLASS SIZE OF LESS THAN 15. SOME CREDIT RECOVERY COURSES ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE FOR STUDENTS ON AN AS NEEDED BASIS. OUR MOST RECENT HEADCOUNT REPORTED TO THE IDOE WAS 261 STUDENTS AND IN THE FIRST YEAR OF OPERATION AT THE EXCEL CENTER. OUTCOMES AS MEASURED BY END OF COURSE ASSESSMENTS (ECA) HAVE BEEN STRONG AND ABOVE THE STATE AVERAGE. OF THE STUDENTS COMPLETING ALGEBRA 1 IN THE SPRING, 11 OF 12 STUDENTS PASSED THEIR ECA. OF THE STUDENTS COMPLETING ENGLISH 5 IN THE SPRING ,11 OF 13 PASSED THEIR ECA. THE EXCEL CENTER HAD 7 STUDENTS IN OUR FIRST GRADUATING CLASS IN JUNE 2016. EACH OF THOSE STUDENTS EARNED AT LEAST 3 COLLEGE CREDITS, AT NO COST, THROUGH OUR COLLABORATION WITH THE IVY TECH COMMUNITY COLLEGE DUAL-CREDIT PROGRAM. IN ADDITION TO EARNING COLLEGE CREDITS AT NO COST, STUDENTS ALSO HAVE THE OPTION TO EARN AN INDUSTRY RECOGNIZED CERTIFICATION. IN THE SUMMER OF 2016 ONE STUDENT COMPLETED CNA TRAINING AND WE HAVE SEVEN STUDENTS ENROLLED IN A COURSE FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING AND LOGISTICS CERTIFICATION. THE EXCEL CENTER OFFERS A UNIQUE ACCELERATED CURRICULUM ALLOWING STUDENTS TO EARN REQUIRED CREDITS MORE QUICKLY. WITH EIGHT WEEK TERMS OFFERED FIVE TIMES PER YEAR, STUDENTS CAN ENROLL AND ADVANCE THROUGH THE PROGRAM AT A STEADY PACE. ONE OF OUR JUNE GRADUATES WAS ABLE TO EARN 22 CREDITS IN THREE TERMS DURING THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR.THE EXCEL CENTER HAS A GOAL TO HELP REMOVE BARRIERS ADULT STUDENTS MAY FACE WHEN IT COMES TO ATTENDING SCHOOL. TWO SIGNIFICANT PROGRAMS ARE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANCE AND ONSITE CHILDCARE. FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FINANCIALLY, WE PROVIDE FREE PASSES FOR THE LOCAL PUBLIC BUS SYSTEM. WE WORKED WITH TRANSPO (SOUTH BEND'S BUS SYSTEM) TO CHANGE ONE OF THEIR ROUTES TO ALLOW A BUS TO STOP AT OUR BUILDING'S MAIN ENTRANCE EIGHT TIMES EACH SCHOOL DAY, PROVIDING GREAT ACCESS FOR OUR STUDENTS. OUR DROP IN CENTER (CHILDCARE PROGRAM) IS FREE TO OUR STUDENTS WHENEVER THEY ARE IN OUR BUILDING. CHILDREN AGES 6 WEEKS TO 7 YEARS OLD ARE ACCEPTED INTO THE CHILDCARE PROGRAM. IN THE CURRENT TERM, WE HAVE HAD AS MANY AS 41 CHILDREN IN THE MORNINGS AND 32 IN THE AFTERNOON. THE DIRECTOR OF THE DROP IN CENTER IS LICENSED IN HIGH SCOPE, A PRE-SCHOOL CURRICULUM DEVELOPED FOR CHILDREN IN POVERTY, AND SHE HAS IMPLEMENTED IT INTO OUR PROGRAM. WE ALSO ASSIST OUR STUDENTS WITH CHILDCARE VOUCHER APPLICATIONS AND HELP THEM EVALUATE CHILDCARE OPTIONS FOR POST-GRADUATION NEEDS. CHILDCARE HAS HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON ENABLING OUR STUDENTS TO BE IN THE CLASSROOM, AND HAS ALSO IMPACTED THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHILDREN IN THE PROGRAM.
