Our mission is to provide children and families throughout the Gardere Community with fundamental services and resources that are ultimately unavailable to them. Through spiritual intervention, local partnerships and selfless volunteering, we touch the lives of many individuals that strive for the same opportunities as surrounding Baton Rouge areas, to learn, to grow and to succeed. | We have succeeded in creating after school tutoring, Mondays - Fridays, 3:30-5pm. -Provided a safe and productive place for suspended students to perform school work. -Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra concerts for the community and & Weekly music appreciation session "Plugging into Music". -Community Garden to promote healthy and nutritious food choices -Gardere Youth Alliance Banquet to recognize the positive influence of sports and teamwork. -Holiday Programs during school breaks to keep area youth positively involved and engaged. -Mediation of Forgiveness & Reconciliation between adults and teenagers following verbal altercations in an attempt to understand each other and move forward in a collaborative and respectful manner. -Discussions with Sheriff Captain Stevens on: overgrown lots, fallen trees & trash; DPW issues; domestic violence prevention efforts; Hispanic community crime prevention and empowerment efforts. -Coordination and implementation of counseling and mentoring by a Sheriff Deputy for youth with behavior concerns. -Recognition and vigils for victims of violence to bring awareness, show empathy and encourage peaceful change in the community. -August: 9th Annual Back to School Extravaganza I CARE Parent Summit 19th Judicial Court visit with Legal Defense Collaboration meeting with St. Gabriel Athletics to provide resources, tools and metrics to replicate the Gardere Initiative programs in St. Gabriel. -Computer access for driver safety testing -Adult Education (HiSET) analysis, counseling and testing -Monthly community coalition meetings to explore resources and plan community events -Continued advocacy for Gardere Lane sidewalks, street lights and pedestrian safety measures. -Continued to provide routine services: faxing, copying, computer access for job applications and social service applications, business plan development assistance, resource lists for various services, opportunities to complete court-ordered community service, and -Service learning opportunities for university students to give back to the community while developing the skills needed to systemically address various social ills. -June 1-July 23: Summer program and High School Youth Development -Enrolled approximately 175 children; hired 20 youth -Girls Empowerment Program which included a session with the Metro Council and meeting with the Mayor. 1. Summer Program: supervision, engagement, and mentoring of children age 4-12. Topic area were Reading, Math, Writing, BREC on the Geaux, Neighborhood Art Project, Law Enforcement, I-CARE, Science, Games, Puzzles and Bible Study. 2. Financial Management: budgeting and goal-setting; learning to set long term goals rather than short term immediate gratification goals; tracking and analysis of long term goal. 3. Personal development: physical fitness, career development, nutrition awareness, leadership, communication, attitude, teamwork, problem solving and professionalism and discussion with a state legislator. 4. Legal Institute: assignment, analysis, research and presentation of a court case. 5. Swimming: instruction and reinforcement techniques. Enrolled 110 youth.
