Through writing workshops that lead to professional publication, we empower those from marginalized back- grounds to tell their own stories in their own voices and, as published authors, to act as leaders and agents of change.

Additional Explanations

Pt III, Line 2

Beginning in FY 20 we separated the program previously named as "Author Empowerment" into its two component tracks: Author Talks and Author Pathways. Author Talks Program trains and provides paid public speaking engagements to our youth authors. Author Pathways provides other professional development opportunities like internships, support with college/scholarship applications, and includes all direct aid and scholarship contributions to author communities.

Nonprofit accounting support does a year-end review to ensure accuracy in accounting. Using these figures, the Executive Director prepares the initial draft of 990 and confers with nonprofit accountant support for any questions. Executive Director shares 990 draft plus all supporting materials with Board Treasurer, who returns with any questions. Once questions handled, board approves and 990 is filed.

Board members take annual Conflict of Interest surveys and disclose any potential conflicts. Any conflicts are discussed by the board and dealt with accordingly (approve, recuse member from relevant decisions, or otherwise remove conflict.)

Salary for all employees was benchmarked against 6-8 peer nonprofit salaries, discussed at board meeting, and approved by governing body. Because the Executive Director is a member of the board, discussion of her salary was conducted via phone by remaining members of the board and approved.
