Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Promote, facilitate, and enable the preservation, discovery, academic study, appreciation, and stewardship of public and privately-owned cultural resources, historic structures, and archaeological sites in the Mid-Atlantic.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Grant: This multi-year project, supported by the State of Maryland and the National Park Service has allowed LTP to support the emergency mitigation of five significant archaeological sites damaged by Hurricane Sandy, and those being threatened by erosion and sea level rise. The project has allowed scholars and students to explore the ongoing impacts of climate change and extreme weather patterns on the preservation of cultural resources. Funding an grant partnerships has recovered important artifacts and information that would have otherwise been permanently lost, and has lent new insights into mitigation strategies when sea level rise threatens significant archaeological sites. Seven scholars/ researchers were assisted in the work by a cadre of citizen scientist volunteers and college interns.$0$75,000
Pig Point Prehistoric Village and Ceremonial Center: Since 2014, this State supported project has enabled one of the Country's most respected archaeological lead a team of scholars, and work alongside students and volunteers as he documents, researches, and authors a book on the highly significant prehistoric complex known as "Pig Point". The project, due to be completed in 2017, has resulted in a professional conference (held in in Summer 2015) where 26 experts in prehistoric archaeology and the Adena culture gathered from across the Country to discuss the significance and findings at this archaeological site. Students and local citizens participated in the conference and have assisted in ongoing research and field investigation efforts.$0$52,366
In cooperation with multiple non-profits like Gibson Island Historical Society, Four Rivers Heritage Area, Maryland Humanities Council, and Galesville Community Center, the Lost Towns Project facilitated the discovery of new historic sites, and developed and implemented a variety of public outreach and educational programming. LTP hosted public events in Galesville, MD during the fiscal year, and is developing a new travelling exhibition using archaeological discoveries from across Anne Arundel County, MD to be mounted in 2017. LTP developed web-based virtual content and an "online" exhibit, to more effectively disseminate historic information to the public, and in 2016, LTP was a key supporter of archaeological investigations which discovered 2 previously unknown archaeological sites on Gibson Island, including a 18th C tenant farm site. These programs have engaged and interacted with about 700 individuals, based on event attendance, volunteer participation, and online metrics.$0$28,342
LTP hosted a "Archaeological Field Session at River Farm" for citizens, students, volunteers, and avocational archaeologists from across the State of Maryland. Sponsored by and in cooperation with the Archaeological Society of Maryland and the State Historic Preservation Office, the LTP saw more than 250 volunteers at this 10-day session. Ongoing artifact processing and site analysis will continue into the next fiscal year.$0$6,200
