FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The partnership 4 kids, inc. (p4k) is a long-term comprehensive education and mentoring program beginning in pre-kindergarten, to and through college and careers. It is the only local program that serves young people for this extensive period and targets the ones growing up in poverty. By providing this type of program, p4k has seen higher test scores, increased school engagement and school attendance, stronger retention and higher graduation rates. The power of education and mentoring mixed together is a proven success model in providing hope for a brighter future which then leads to lessening poverty. The program begins in in 12 title one elementary schools and then carries over to 5 middle schools, followed by five high schools. These schools are mainly located in northeast and southeast omaha-two areas with high levels of poverty. The model allows mentoring at each level of programming which is a key ingredient. Research has proven that having a positive role model in your life increases how a student views their future and increases self-confidence. At the elementary level, p4k serves every student enrolled in the school and is a program that occurs during the school day with two mentoring programs. 1. At pre-kindergarten and kindergarten the program is a book buddy mentoring program that runs for 7 consecutive months. Every month the mentor reads a book to the entire class and then engages in the students in like activities that relate to the book. At the end of each meeting, the students receive a copy of the new book home and activities to build a home library and encourage reading in the home setting. One of the main reasons that young kids growing up in poverty are lacking grade level reading skills is due to the number of adequate books in the home. 2. As the students enter 1st grade though elementary graduation (depending on the school configuration; this could be either 5th or 6th grade) they are involved in goal setting mentoring program. Each student will have designed goals in reading and life skill. These goals are set by the reading program and live skills model that each individualized school uses. The mentors, who are called goal buddies, are assigned two classes of students, usually 3-4 mentors per class. Once a month they meet with the class to talk about careers and college knowledge and meet individually with each student in the assigned group and discuss the student's progress in each area and really get to know the student. This is first opportunity the student has had to meet 1-1 in the school setting with a mentor. The goals are based on semesters and each semester student goal achievement is celebrated in classroom celebrations in december and school wide celebrations in may. All 4th grade elementary students visit a college campus and all 5th grade students are on various career field trips. The graduating elementary students are recruited to apply for the p4k group mentoring after-school program which is conducted in 5 middle schools. The p4k elementary schools, for the most part are feeder schools into our p4k middle schools. The criteria for application are: 1. Student and/or family want to see their child have a mentor 2. The student is eligible for free or reduced lunch 3. The students show academic promise, but is not meeting it. 4. Recommended by school personnel. Twenty-five to thirty students are then selected for each grade level at the schools. These students are formally matched with a mentor in small group setting of 3-4 students. Along with the mentor, each meeting also includes a lesson which is a part of a five-year curriculum. These lesson opportunities deal with subject matters that are needed to help build life and reasoning skills, financial literacy, healthy relationships, strengths, education readiness, community service, career exploration, graduating, and college. Upon graduating from the p4k middle schools, the student groups move to 5 high schools. When students enter the
