Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Creighton University is a Catholic and Jesuit comprehensive university committed to excellence in its selected undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. As Catholic, Creighton is dedicated to the pursuit of truth in all its forms and is guided by the living tradition of the Catholic Church. As Jesuit, Creighton participates in the tradition of the Society of Jesus which provides an integrating vision of the world that arises out of a knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. As comprehensive, Creighton's education embraces several colleges and professional schools and is directed to the intellectual, social, spiritual, physical and recreational aspects of students' lives and to the promotion of justice. Creighton exists for students and learning. Members of the Creighton community are challenged to reflect on transcendent values, including their relationship with God, in an atmosphere of freedom of inquiry, belief and religious worship.

Creighton University, founded in 1878, is one of 28 Jesuit, Catholic universities in the U.S. Through its 9 colleges and schools and academic medical center, Creighton provides more than 4,000 undergraduate and more than 3,700 professional and graduate students an atmosphere that challenges them academically and professionally, and supports and inspires them individually. Community service is a hallmark of Creighton's Jesuit, Catholic tradition and foundational to its mission. Last year, students, faculty and staff volunteered more than 398,000 hours through service programs locally, nationally and internationally.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The Form 990 is completed and reviewed by management. Upon completion, the Audit and Compliance Committee of the Board of Trustees reviews the Forms 990 and 990-T. Prior to filing, all members of the Board of Trustees are provided access to the Form 990 via e-mail communication, stating that the Audit and Compliance Committee has completed its review.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All University senior officers and members of the Board of Trustees are required annually to submit a statement disclosing any conflicts of interest to the Office of the University President. Any potential conflicts disclosed are reviewed by the Governance and Leadership Committee of the Board of Trustees. The Governance and Leadership Committee determines what further action should be taken to prevent or mitigate the conflict of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Review of total compensation for all officers, key employees (in Creighton's case, key employees represent the Deans of the two largest schools in the University) and ten highest-compensated employees is conducted annually. The process involves 1) collection of market comparison data which is reviewed and approved by the independent Executive Compensation Committee; 2) a review of the market compensation data, in conjunction with individual performance evaluation ratings, by the President; 3) a review of the compensation and performance information by the President and the Senior Vice President for Operations with the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The information is subsequently reviewed and approved by the full Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. The process is documented in the minutes from the related meetings.
