“| Explanation:| What an awesome program year 2023 for STARS Mentoring Program. This year felt like we were finally recovering from the student participation decline post pandemic. We were able to serve approx. 167 students over our Fall Summer Programming. Girls volleyball boys basketball co-ed track mens group music group and cheer and dance. We were really excited about adding 7 on 7 football and community exploration this summer. We continued with the theme students stand against gun violence and promoted nonviolence message throughout the school tear summer. We also held our annual community events. Bridging the Gap were our students mix with our police department and play a game of basketball with mixed teams. We also held our annual Summer Inspiration where we handed out 76 backpacks and gave out school supplies and inspired students about the upcoming school year. We also held our 6 annual Black history month celebration at Helensview high school. These events allow our students to engage with the community they live in build relationships and receive support from that same community. This year in partnership with the city of Portland we were able to provide 5 graduating students a $2000-dollar stipend to get off to a good start as a young adult. The money was to be used as the student needed. The biggest news for us this year was receiving a grant from DOJ that will allow us to hire some of our volunteer mentors and students who have graduated the program and are aspiring mentors. We also paid for 2 of our alumni students background checks and we will be able to provide employment for them through 2024 for 6 mentors. Through our partnership with PIL we are able to offer programs to all schools in PIL. We will also have an opportunity to purchase our first van transportation this allows us to lengthen our reach in the community and provide resources to different students in different areas.”
