FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The organization is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes including providing a venue for exhibits of art and artistic collections; sponsoring seminars, lectures and gatherings that encourage and promote the creative arts; and providing an educational setting to describe and celebrate the life and creativity of ashley bryan.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

During the year 2018, the ongoing inventory process continued in the art storage facility in boston. This change of venue prompted invitations to interested institutions to come and view the material, a process that commenced in early 2018. Representatives from the university of delaware and the university of pennsylvania visited the facility to review the archive; penn also sent a team to visit ashley in maine and see what remained in the house. An rfp was sent out in june of 2018 with a deadline of september 1. The winning proposal was submitted by the university of pennsylvania, and the process of finalizing the agreement commenced with the hope formal transfer could take place in the spring of 2019. The exhibition ashley bryan: painter and poet closed at the high museum in atlanta in january 2018 attracting over 200,000 visitors. A distillation of the exhibition traveled to the portland maine museum of art in august 2018 and again was received enthusiastically with 58,060 visitors. The museum formed a consortium of arts organizations to reprise the production of beautiful blackbird as originally put on in atlanta. Additionally, work by bryan was included in two other major exhibitions in 2018. A coretta scott king award winner exhibition organized by the national center for children's illustrated literature which toured nationally and was installed at the bologna (italy) children's book fair in the spring of 2019 using digital reproductions) and telling a people's story: african-american children's illustrated literature organized by the miami university art museum in oxford ohio, a major symposium attracting scholars from all over the country celebrated the opening of this exhibition. As well, a small archival exhibition was installed at the hauser-wirth institute in new york city during the month of october, which helped raise the profile of the archive. There were continued numerous requests to reproduce ashley's work in magazines ranging from general interest periodicals to more specialized publications. The center cooperated fully to accommodate these various requests as well as other inquiries driven by awareness of the center through the website. The storyteller pavilion re-opened in early july of 2018 with the stained- glass windows still in a temporary but nevertheless elegant display. With docents enhancing the experience, the pavilion welcomed over 1,300 visitors over the course of the summer. The pavilion reduced its hours from 42 hours 10-4 seven days a week after labor day to 20 hours 11-3 five days a week, and after columbus day, it was open by appointment.

IRS990/Desc0DURING THE YEAR 2018, THE ONGOING INVENTORY PROCESS CONTINUED IN THE ART STORAGE FACILITY IN BOSTON.
