Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Initiative Eau is a non-governmental organization working to strengthen water, sanitation, and hygiene capacity in developing areas and crisis zones. We do so by 1) implementing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene projects, 2) assisting other organizations in designing their clean water projects based on our experience, and 3) through our research. Initiative Eau currently conducts programming in Burkina Faso.

To strengthen water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and public health capacity in developing areas and crisis zones for improved health outcomes.

Direct Implementation Program. Under its implementation program Initiative Eau made a number of accomplishments during the 2020 tax year. Example 1: Conflict caused by violent extremist organizations in Burkina Faso's East region has led to mass population displacement to Fada N'Gourma, over 20 000 individuals as of September 2020. This rapid influx has placed considerable stress on the city's already insufficient drinking water infrastructure. Displaced populations have largely settled in unplanned, informal areas of the city, where drinking water infrastructure is especially limited. To respond this situation, Initiative: Eau, supported by the Rotary Club of Lewes, rehabilitated a nonfunctional handpump borehole in Fada N'Gourma's Secteur 6 Nord neighborhood. Specifically, Initiative: Eau 1) liaised with municipal and regional authorities to identify a suitable handpump borehole for rehabilitation, 2) engaged local water point mechanics and masons to execute required reparations, and 3) analyzed water quality to ensure suitability for consumption. The rehabilitated handpump borehole serves over 500 people in the neighborhood, both the displaced population and the host community, with safe water. Example 2: Given the importance of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) capacity in preventing the spread of COVID-19, Initiative: Eau conducted a WASH needs assessment in the village of Gando and the health centers of Sabtenga and Soumagou (Burkina Faso). This assessment revealed critical gaps in 1) safe water access and storage, 2) environmental hygiene capacities, and 3) handwashing employment at all three sites. Based on this assessment, Initiative: Eau proposed a series of programmatic interventions to strengthen WASH capacity in Gando, Sabtenga, and Soumagou to fill identified gaps. Recommended programmatic interventions included installation of critical infrastructure, trainings to reinforce community and health center staff knowledge, and contribution of essential materials. On the basis of these recommendations, the Sidney E. Frank Foundation awarded Initiative: Eau a grant to implement the recommended programmatic interventions to increase WASH capacity and support resilience against COVID-19 in Gando, Sabtenga, and Soumagou. Over the 01 October 2020 30 April 2021 grant period, Initiative: Eau implemented the recommended programmatic interventions in close collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Water and Sanitation for the Centre-Est region and the Tenkodogo Mayors Office. Through the project, Initiative: Eau has been able to impact an estimated 3 519 beneficiaries directly through the infrastructure and training activities of the project. In addition, an estimated 16 174 individuals benefit indirectly from improved quality of health services in the Sabtenga and Soumagou health centers resulting from improved health center WASH capacity. Beneficiaries include both men and women, and adults and children, living in these areas.$1,463$53,842
Research Program. Under its research program Initiative: Eau made progress during tax year 2020. Example 1: Given the role of Fada N'Gourma (Burkina Faso) as a regional economic hub and its large IDP population, there was a critical need to understand the current WASH and IPC capacities of the health centers of Fada NGourma. In order to identify areas requiring support, Initiative: Eau conducted periodic diagnostic assessments of WASH and IPC capacities in the six public health centers in Fada N'Gourma. Specifically, Initiative: Eau 1) administered a health center WASH and IPC capacity survey, developed by UNICEF, to the directors of each health center, 2) analyzed survey data to identify potential intervention opportunities, and 3) prepared a final report presenting results and recommending a set of priority interventions designed to strengthen WASH and IPC capacities. Based on our findings, Initiative: Eau identified a number of critical gaps for intervention, including: 1) insufficient water access and storage capacity in several health centers, 2) inadequate procedures and aging infrastructure preventing proper excreta management, and 3) shortcomings in procedures, equipment, and skills for adequate environmental hygiene, solid waste management, and infection prevention and control.$0$6,276
