Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Rancho Alegre's mission is to preserve and promote Conjunto music, an accordion-driven roots music genre born in south Texas, popular among Mexican-Americans for generations. Its projects include a podcast, a nonprofit record label, digitizing recordings, artist interviews, documenting Tejano and Conjunto music, speaking to schools and universities about Conjunto, helping artists with business resources, and presenting the Rancho Alegre Conjunto Music Festival (RACMF) and other public events throughout the year.

Our mission is to preserve and promote Tejano and Conjunto music. We accomplish this mission through a variety of activities including recording extended interviews with artists, a weekly radio show on KOOP Radio, converting non-digital media, and live music events including the Rancho Alegre Conjunto Festival.

The interview with Hinojosa, who began his career in Tejano music in his early teens and has grown up along with the genre, yielded many first-person accounts of information that isn't found anywhere. The interview with Rudy Garcia and bandmates was the first ever recorded about his career and showed his independence, style, and history. His application was approved and he was inducted in January 2017. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 2 people * 48 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $2261.76.$0$90
Interview trip to Alice, Texas. February 2016. We recorded some station ID's and rescheduled for another time. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 2 people * 24 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $1130.88.$0$48
Produced weekly Tejano and Conjunto radio program on KOOP Radio. Ours is the only program specializing in these two genres on FM Radio in Austin, Texas. We broadcast music from legendary, veteran and up and coming performers in Conjunto and Tejano music. We started a monthly guest DJ program in November 2015, where listeners brought their own playlists and joined us in the studio. In-kind Volunteer hours for skilled trade: 2 people x 4 hours per week x 52 weeks x generally accepted average volunteer hourly rate ($23.56/hour) = $9800$0$0
Interview trip June 2016. Traveled to San Antonio, TX to interview Tejano artist and Grammy Award Winner David Farias. The extended interview was broadcast on KOOP radio in November 2016. Volunteer hours in-kind donation: 2 people * 5 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer ($23.56) = $235.60$0$0

Interview trip to San Angelo, Texas, September 2016. We interviewed Tejano music superstar Elida Reyna after trying for several years without success due to scheduling difficulties. The interview will be broadcast January 23, 2017 on our FM radio show. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 3 people * 10 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $706.80.$0$0

Unfortunately, he lost his battle in January 2016. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 2 people * 33 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $1554.96.$0$0

Since the broadcast, they have been in demand and have had several public and private performances. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 2 people * 4 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $188.48.$0$0

The free, family-friendly event crosses all demographics and features polka, conjunto and zydeco/cajun styles. The mission of Texas Folklife is similar to ours, though much more broad, so we tend to collaborate frequently on projects with shared interests. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 2 people * 5 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $235.60.$0$0
June 2016 - Emceed accordion gathering for the Central Texas Accordion Association. While this organization tends to focus more on czech and German polkas, there are a couple of members who do play conjunto and their membership is interested in learning more about it. Three of the club members, including former Austin mayor Gus Garcia, came to the KOOP studio to perform live on air before the event. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 1 person * 7 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $164.92.$0$0
October 2015 - Interview with BJ Moncivais of Valmon Records in Austin. Moncivais was in town from Denver, Colorado, and sat down with an interview about his father's record label, the legendary Valmon Records. Not much is documented about this label and his father died a couple years before the interview. The label was one of the first independent Chicano music labels in Texas and worked to make quality recordings for artists who just needed a chance. One of those groups was Little Joe Hernandez and his brothers from Temple, TX, Little Joe & the Latinaires. Joe rocketed to Tejano superstardom and legendary status. We broadcasted the Valmon Records interview a couple days later in October 2015. Valmon has since been attempting to reissue and restore the recordings they have on vinyl. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 1 people * 10 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $235.60.$0$0

We broadcasted this interview in August 2016 before a showcase of the record label's new artists in Austin. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 2 people * 3 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $141.36.$0$0
July 2016 interview with Houston's Monico Cortez II in New Braunfels. Cortez was at a venue south of Austin and we took the opportunity to meet up with him and learn about his career, inheriting his family's musical legacy (Los Hermanos Cortez). Interview has not yet been broadcast and will be aired in tandem with his new album. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 2 people * 5 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $235.60.$0$0
November 2015: Live in-studio interview with Steve Rat Silvas, Erika Santana and Robby Garza of local group Cañonazo in Austin. The group had just released their first album and the duet of Garza and Santana with the direction of Tejano veteran arranger Silvas was beginning to get noticed outside Austin. The group went on to be nominated for several awards and perform at various events outside Austin and continues to do so. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 1 people * 2 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $47.12.$0$0
Digital conversion and restoration of hundreds of rare analog recordings and their artwork. Tejano and conjunto music are famously regional music forms, and as such, were recorded on very small independently-owned record labels. In many cases, the masters were lost and the only recordings are in obsolete media such as vinyl, 8-track and cassette. We record the music from the original, digitize and clean them up and save them. Additionally, we photograph and restore the accompanying artwork, if any, since much of the documentation for this music is only found on the vinyl record sleeves or liner notes. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 2 people * 21.48 hours per week (average) * 50 weeks * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $50607.84.$0$0

While this organization tends to focus more on czech and German polkas, there are a couple of members who do play conjunto and their membership is interested in learning more about it. Three of the club members, including former Austin mayor Gus Garcia, came to the KOOP studio to perform live on air before the event. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 1 person * 7 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $164.92.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt13October 2015 - Interview with BJ Moncivais of Valmon Records in Austin. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 1 people * 10 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $235.60.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt14July 2016 Interview with Michelle, CEO of Corpus Christi-based Hacienda Records. Michelle was in town and met with us to discuss her solo career and also her new role as CEO of the legendary Tejano label, Hacienda Records. We broadcasted this interview in August 2016 before a showcase of the record label's new artists in Austin. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 2 people * 3 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $141.36.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt15July 2016 interview with Houston's Monico Cortez II in New Braunfels. Cortez was at a venue south of Austin and we took the opportunity to meet up with him and learn about his career, inheriting his family's musical legacy (Los Hermanos Cortez). Interview has not yet been broadcast and will be aired in tandem with his new album. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 2 people * 5 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $235.60.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt16November 2015: Live in-studio interview with Steve Rat Silvas, Erika Santana and Robby Garza of local group Cañonazo in Austin. The group had just released their first album and the duet of Garza and Santana with the direction of Tejano veteran arranger Silvas was beginning to get noticed outside Austin. The group went on to be nominated for several awards and perform at various events outside Austin and continues to do so. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 1 people * 2 hours * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $47.12.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt17Digital conversion and restoration of hundreds of rare analog recordings and their artwork. Volunteer hour in-kind contribution value: 2 people * 21.48 hours per week (average) * 50 weeks * generally-accepted hourly rate for skilled volunteer work ($23.56) = $50607.84.
