ADVOCACY: The Blue Ribbon Foundation produced "Forgotten Plague - ME and the Future of Medicine." It is a 69-minute film hailed as a "Must See Documentary" by the Huffington Post. Directed by Emmy Award winner Nicole Castillo and Ryan Prior, the film tells the story of an afflicted journalist who embarks on a quest to discover why the Centers for Disease Control and medical system have neglected his disease and left millions sidelined from life. The worldwide emotional response to a series of articles Prior wrote for USA Today in 2012 inspired him to tackle the project. In 2013, shortly after graduating from the University of Georgia, Castillo and Prior, then 23, embarked on the ambitious nationwide production. "Forgotten Plague" is an investigation into myalgic encephalomyelitis, commonly called chronic fatigue syndrome (or ME/CFS), a disease that Stanford geneticist Ron Davis has called, "One of the last major diseases that we know nothing about." Following its premiere at Hollywood's Chinese Theater, the film garnered sold out screenings in theaters throughout the United States. In December 2015 it became available for streaming on iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon Instant Video. The following January the foundation began shipping DVDs worldwide. By February the foundation had shipped nearly 600 DVDs. ME/CFS organizations associations, support groups, and activists around the world have shown the film to raise awareness and generate donations to support local programs associated with ME/CFS. The Blue Ribbon Foundation promoted the film for use in medical continuing education programs. In 2015 more than 300 healthcare workers in the Atlanta area alone have seen the film as part of their continuing education. In April and May of 2016 more than 300 US constituents ordered films to be shipped to their US Senators and members of Congress. This barrage coincided with the ME Action-sponsored Millions Missing march in Washington DC$0$36,589
ADVOCACY IMPACT GRANTS: The Blue Ribbon Foundation (BRF) added this program area to leverage foundation resources to fund other organizations advocating on behalf of ME/CFS patients. In 2016 the BRF issued grants totaling $17,500 to the ME Action Network. ME Action Network hosted worldwide "Millions Missing" marches and produced a brilliant documentary film about the incredible suffering endured by ME/CFS patients. ME Action does outstanding work and the BRF looks forward to continuing to support this vibrant and engaging organization.$17,500$0
MEDICAL SCHOOL FELLOWSHIPS: In this fiscal year, the Blue Ribbon Foundation did not fund fellowships for Medical School students to study ME/CFS. The Institute for Neuro Immune Medicine at Nova Southeastern University near Ft Lauderdale, FL will return to hosting fellows who work directly with world-renowned ME/CFS researchers. This fellowship relationship led the Dean of the Medical School at Nova Southeastern University to incorporate ME/CFS into their curriculum. Donors have pledged funds to the Blue Ribbon Foundation that will support similar fellowships in the summer of 2017 at the Medical School at Nova Southeastern University. In addition to advancing research on ME/CFS, these fellowships are critical for training the next generation of medical professionals about ME/CFS. A recent study at DePaul University found that 96% of medical schools do not include ME/CFS in their curriculum. Partnering with medical schools to offer their students meaningful fellowships will lead medical schools to incorporate the latest knowledge about ME/CFS into their curriculum.$0$0
