“Each member of the brain tumor network's (btn) board of directors is provided a full copy of the 990. Since each member has prior experience in evaluating 990's stemming from service on other nonprofit boards, no additional training was necessary. The 990's are individually reviewed, and board members are instructed to flag any concerns and to submit questions to the president of the board within 10 days. Any questions or concerns are compiled and vetted by the board president and the tax preparer. Amendments/changes are shared with all board members prior to the return being signed by the board president.”

“Each board member and key employee (as defined by the board of directors) receives and signs a conflict of interest statement at the beginning of their relationship with the brain tumor network (btn) and annually thereafter. Any existing or potential conflicts are disclosed at those times, and each individual affirms by his/her signature the following: a) have received a copy of the policy, b) has read and understands the policy, and c) has agreed to comply with the policy. It remains the responsibility of each individual to scrutinize their business activities and transactions as well as their relationships for potential conflicts. If such a conflict exists, disclosure must be made immediately.”

“Prior to initiating a search for a new position, salary data is gathered. Comparable positions are identified as: having similar levels of responsibility, similar requisite skillsets, similar core functions/tasks, similar levels of experience, and requiring comparable levels of education. Salaries are also benchmarked geographically (southeastern us). Due-diligence includes compensation surveys, information from 990's, and conversations with leaders of other nonprofits. Salary ranges are then set by the president of the board of directors.”
