Mission

To bring historians, students, faculty, writers, legislators, oranizations, corporations, artists and the general public together to educate, collaborate and organize resources to save these historical slave dwelling structures that are important to our american history.

OUR MISSION - The Slave Dwelling Project's mission is to identify and assist property owners, government agencies and organizations to preserve extant slave dwellings. OUR PURPOSE - The purpose of our work is to become a clearinghouse for the identification of resources to document and preserve these slave dwellings. OUR TASK - It is essential that the Slave Dwelling Project serve as a conduit for the identification of preservation resources for owners of slave dwellings that have a desire to save these dwellings. We also seek to assist in the acquisition of slave dwellings within a community in order to mitigate the possibility of demolition. OUR GOAL - Our goal is to bring historians, students, faculty, writers, legislators, organizations, corporations, artists and the general public together to educate, collaborate and organize resources to save these important collectibles of our American history.

The Slave Dwelling Project conducted its 3rd Annual Slave Dwelling Project Conference in 2016. One hundred-fifty historians, students, faculty, writers, legislators, organizations, corporations, artists and the general public convened in Columbia, SC to educate, collaborate and organize resources to save the extant slave dwellings in the United States.$21,500$21,500
The Slave Dwelling Project conducted Inalienable Rights: Living History Through the Eyes of the Enslaved at four historic sites in South Carolina. African American living historians, in period dress, gave an estimated audience of one-thousand people, the opportunity to experience living history through the eyes of the enslaved.$8,000$8,000
Slave Dwelling Project sleepovers allow participants to spend nights in extant slave dwellings throughout the United States. Participants have spent nights in slave dwellings in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.$5,000$5,000
