“The neighborherd initiative is designed to manage production, delivery and educational programs related to sustainable food production for the local school district and surrounding community. This is a financially self- sustaining closed system within the participating school district designed to accomplish the following: provide naturally raised hormone-free pastured meat for the school district's lunch program the neighborherd works with school districts and their food service providers to replace the commodity ground beef in their supply chain with ground beef from our naturally and locally grazed herd. These cattle are never given steroids or hormones and spend their days eating natural, chemical-free pasture forages. In order to keep the net cost to the district of this program close to zero, the ground beef is sold to the school district at close to the price they would otherwise pay for commodity ground beef. Practice sustainable rotational grazing on leased or granted-use land we practice rotational grazing in which the herd spends only short periods on each pasture before moving to the next. This ensures that only the most desirable grasses are consumed, that the grasses are not grazed beyond a point from which they can robustly regrow, and that the herd moves onto fresh pasture regularly while the manure on the previous paddock begins to break down and fertilize the pasture. Undesirable and inedible plants are trampled and decompose, helping to build a deep organic loam layer. Partner with local school districts to provide educational programs in sustainable food systems. We work with the partner school district to design and formalize educational programs introducing students to the issues, benefits and limitations of sustainable agriculture, and the connection between animal husbandry, food production and consumption. The grazing program is kept accessible to the school district for farm visits, and the managers of the program make themselves available to the schools for presentations as requested.”
