Delta Sculling Center provides access to fitness, health, leisure and recreation for people of all abilities through the inclusive sport of sculling (i.e. rowing). We adapt our boats and equipment to fit the needs of individuals so that everyone can participate. So even if people have physical, cognitive or sensory/perceptual challenges, they should be able to find freedom on the water. We want to support everyone, no matter what motivation brings them to us, for example, those who want to become more fit, regain/improve health, find a new sport, enjoy the Delta, train for competition, improve their sculling technique, or find an adaptive sport.

| Delta Sculling Center (DSC) kicked off 2016 by taking our adaptive rowers to Sacramento State Aquatic Center and Peninsula (Redwood City) Indoor Rowing Championships where they competed against other rowers with disabilities on indoor rowing machines. These same athletes continued to train the rest of the Winter and all Spring toward the Gold Rush Regatta (Sacramento State) where they competed in 1K races and at Lake Merritt in USRowings SouthWest Regional Championships. Two of them also flew to Philadephia in the middle of August with 5 of our able-bodied volunteers to participate in the nations longest running (34 years) only fully adaptive regatta where they competed in multiple events, both alone and with able-bodied partners. In total we taught and trained 5 adaptive athletes during the year two with lower extremity amputation, one with paraplegia and one with quadriplegia as well as an individual with motor deficits due to an aneurysm.During the Spring, DSC was finally able to establish a strong relationship with the VA Palo Alto Health Care System in Livermore to begin serving disabled veterans. We organized and conducted a special training program for six VA recreational therapists and with the help of a subset of this group, we established a special program to work with their clients. We were already working with four vets from outside of the VA system and the rec therapists introduced 4 new veterans to us from their caseload. Those vets still row with us almost a year later and two of them have become so independent that they have been discharged from the VA programs they were participating in. During the summer these vets gained enough skill and fitness to be able to participate in a 3K exhibition row at the Wine Country Classic Regatta in Petaluma, the first weekend of October. They staffed three boats a four-person scull, and two doubles. This military veteran exhibition row was the first of its kind at this particular regatta. All of this work was achieved by a growing volunteer staff. We now have four volunteers who work full-time with our Tues/Thurs am program (for adaptive rowers and military vets) and eight volunteers who assist one day a week. A coach travels down to us from Sacramento every Tuesday to help out also. This volunteer staff is part of a growing body of able-bodied scullers who comprise DSC we now number approximately 35. Our head coach as well as a strong volunteer assistant coach staff at least five coached practices weekly for this group. During this year we have had to add a part-time independent contractor as bookkeeper to alleviate some of the workload of our executive director and head coach. DSC had two additional initiatives. We piloted a summer camp program for under-served Stockton youth which ran the month of July. We hired an outside coach and recruited additional volunteers to assist. Some of our membership provided transportation to youth who would not have a means to/from the boathouse. We also raised funds for the tuition of 2/3 of the youth who participated who could not afford the same. In addition they were supplied with sunglasses, water bottles, hats and river shoes necessities for being on the water which were not within their means. Lastly we garnered the collaboration and support of the Port of Stockton, the Familly Resource and Referral Center of Stockton and University of the Pacific to bring an inspirational speaker, Arshay Cooper, author of Suga Water to give 17 talks to student groups and the general community during the week that we hosted him in October. He was a member of the first all-Black boys eight-person high school crew in the US and in his talks he explains how rowing saved him from a life of poverty, violence, gangs and drugs. We ended the year in a big way every program at DSC (OarBusters, our adaptive program; Freedom Rows-Delta Heroes, our military veteran program; and our general sculling program) had athletes that competed together on indoor rowing machines in Concept2s Holiday Challenge where every meter they rowed on the land rowing machines throughout the month raised money toward world non-profit organizations designated by Concept2. Our team finished second in the world among all teams of a similar size! | $57,718 | - |
