Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Student Voice provides students with the platform to become leaders to change their local schools and communities. We meet students where they are and identify student-centric solutions that address the systemic inequity in the American education system. Our programs allow us to follow a theory of change to amplify, aggregate and accelerate student voices.

Empower and equip K-12 students to be leaders in their schools.

Part of the National Outreach was a program called Student Voice Strategies in which we work with companies, organizations, and school districts to develop youth centered programs and advisories.

Form 990, Part III, Line 3: Ceased Conducting or Significant Changes To Services

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Online Community: Youth United For Action (YU4A) is a Facebook group of young activists across the United States that are actively addressing solutions to pressing challenges in their communities. The Facebook group is led by Student Voice in partnership with numerous other organizations in the youth activism community. Together, we believe that a connected community of young change-makers, regardless of identity and perspectives, will advance the individual and collective impact of the student voice movement. Tangibly, the group shares opportunities (e.g. scholarships, events, fellowships, etc.) and stories of our members successes and struggles. The Facebook group has a current membership of 740 students. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Student Voice Strategies prepares institutions to accept youth leaders as partners in making change, while challenging systems that have kept marginalized voices out for too long. Student Voice team members work with corporations, organizations, school districts, and other institutions by providing coaching for adults who are seeking to center youth voice, facilitate and co-brand panels, workshops, and trainings on youth voice, conduct focus groups, listening sessions, and stakeholder meetings, and provide comprehensive youth engagement strategies for adult-led organizations. Student Voice executed over 10 Student Voice Strategies projects with corporations, organizations, school districts, and other institutions. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: The awareness & outreach program relates to exposing & educating communities regarding systematic inequality issues that schools currently encounter.Throughout 2020, we addressed issues like higher education access (Test Optional Now campaign), the reopening of K-12 public schools (Move School Forward), universal lunch access(Free Lunch for All campaign), the power and potential of school board elections to make local change (Our Schools, Our Boards, Our Election campaign), the importance of youth inclusion in the Department of Education (Start With Students campaign), and student free speech rights (Save Student Speech campaign). OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: Our Learning Lab, an ongoing training series open to all students, introduces participants to the fundamentals of how education systems work, who holds decision making power within them, how structural inequities have shaped our schools, and how youth power can address them. Over the course of 2020, 14 Learning Lab sessions were hosted thatstudents aged 13-23 attended.

IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt0Current Year Facts and Circumstances: Student Voice, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works in all 50 states to position and equip students as storytellers, organizers, and partners who advocate for student-driven solutions to educational inequity. Student Voice's work is driven by the belief that in order to achieve equity in schools, power must be meaningfully shifted towards young people most marginalized by the education system. Our organization relies on funding sources from nonprofit, philanthropic, and corporate grants and donations as well as from individual contributions. In recent years, we have expanded our funding base by introducing "Student Voice Strategies", a revenue model that includes paid partnerships with organizations interested in learning from our team how to elevate youth voices in their own mission-driven educational efforts. With these revenue sources, we will be able to expand our message to include more students who will be equipped to engage in issues around educational inequity in the American school system. During 2020, we ran five direct storytelling and organizing training programs for K12 students, reaching more than 300 students in more than 30 states. We also ran several national public awareness and outreach campaigns around issues resulting from the closure of K12 public schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These campaigns engaged thousands of students in conversation around equity in education. Our board is composed of a group of students and educational leaders from a variety of lived experiences in the United States school system and in the field of educational equity. Across these experiences, our board members share one common goal: to address the systemic inequity in the American educational system through meaningful partnership with students most impacted by these inequities. Each member brings a wealth of knowledge with a personal devotion and goal to eliminate these inequities. We are able to serve the interest of the general public by creating open and accessible pathways for students to engage in the work of educational equity and amplifying their perspectives throughout the educational nonprofit field and the public education system. Our work continues to benefit the general public on a continuing basis by rotating board members after serving an average term of 4 years and a formal annual review for staff members. By completing these tasks, leadership is always fresh and connected to students most impacted by educational inequity with aspirations to benefit the general public. We continue to set examples for educational leaders as well as other students to resolve issues geared towards our mission statement. The programs described on the 990, Part III describe each programs accomplishments.
