Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8B

The governing body does not have committees.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Prior to filing, the Form 990 will be reviewed by the Director of Operations and Senior Advisor and sent to the Board of Directors for approval.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The conflict of interest policy is reviewed by the Director of Human Resources annually and signed upon initial hire for all employees, including key employees and employees who serve as officers. Board members, however, are only required to disclose if any conflicts exist. Employees acknowledge the policy yearly when they sign their yearly contract. Board Members and Officers discuss any involvement with other organizations within the space with the organization's leadership when they are approached to join the Board. It is the obligation of each employee, Board Member, and Officer to disclose any conflicts as soon as they are known. Individual employees, Board Members, and Officers who do disclose conflicts of interest, or potential conflicts of interest, are not included in any conversations or decision making pertaining to the conflict of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The three most recent Forms 990 (including financial information), the Bylaws, Articles of Incorporation, Form 1023 Application for Exemption, and Conflict of Interest Policy are provided to the public upon request.

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Youth United For Action (YU4A) is a Facebook group of young activists across the United States that are actively addressing solutions to pressing challenges in their communities. The Facebook group is led by Student Voice in partnership with numerous other organizations in the youth activism community. Together, we believe that a connected community of young change-makers, regardless of identity and perspectives, will advance the individual and collective impact of the student voice movement. Tangibly, the group shares opportunities (e.g. scholarships, events, fellowships, etc.) and stories of our members successes and struggles. The Facebook group has a current membership of 805 students. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Student Voice Strategies prepares institutions to accept youth leaders as partners in making change, while challenging systems that have kept marginalized voices out for too long. Student Voice team members work with corporations, organizations, school districts, and other institutions by providing coaching for adults who are seeking to center youth voice, facilitate and co-brand panels, workshops, and trainings on youth voice, conduct focus groups, listening sessions, and stakeholder meetings, and provide comprehensive youth engagement strategies for adult-led organizations. Student Voice executed over 5 Student Voice Strategies projects with corporations, organizations, school districts, and other institutions. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: The awareness & outreach program relates to exposing & educating communities regarding systematic inequality issues that schools currently encounter.Throughout 2022, we drove and participated in dialogues related to the importance of young people being involved in philanthropy with Grantmakers for Thriving Youth, corporate engagement in education with TED, and district level school innovation with New Hanover County schools. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: Our Learning Lab, an ongoing training series open to all students, introduces participants to the fundamentals of how education systems work, who holds decision making power within them, how structural inequities have shaped our schools, and how youth power can address them. Over the course of 2022, 4 Learning Lab sessions were hosted thatstudents aged 13-23 attended. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 8: The PressCorpsprogram is comprised of alumni of our Journalism Fellowship program. Through thePressCorps, Journalism Fellow alums receive further ongoing support and training in writing, publishing, and pitching written pieces to news outlets. In 2022, 3 alums of the Journalism Fellowship actively participated in the Press Corps and members attended 2 continuing development training sessions. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 9: The Student Voice Organizing Fellowship trained 21 high school students from across the United States in education justice organizing and leadership development. Over the course of a school year, Student Voice Organizing Fellows are prepared to advance education justice and create systemic social change in their schools and local areas. Through immersion in a community of peers committed to equity in schools, fellows develop skills such as effective communication with peers and decision-makers, identifying issues and solutions in their schools and building capacity to organize student power in their communities.

IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt0Current Year Facts and Circumstances: Student Voice, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works in all 50 states to position and equip students as storytellers, organizers, and partners who advocate for student-driven solutions to educational inequity. Student Voice's work is driven by the belief that in order to achieve equity in schools, power must be meaningfully shifted towards young people most marginalized by the education system.Student Voices public support percentage for the five-year period ended December 31, 2022 was approximately 20%.Student Voice, Inc. maintains a continuous and bona fide program for solicitation of funds from the general public and the community of people interested in students' contributions to their own educational environment. The scope of fundraising activities is reasonable in light of Student Voice's charitable activities. As presented in Part IX of the Form 990, fundraising expenses are approximately 10% of charitable expenses, with the majority of fundraising costs attributed to salaries and wages. There are several staff members who spend a portion of their time dedicated to fundraising efforts which include identifying prospective funders, reaching out to make connections, submitting grant applications, and considering ways to maintain relationships with existing and potential funders who do work in their field. The organization is still developing and implementing programming strategies to support their mission, and thus have not launched a broad scale fundraising approach. They have received significant fundraising from several large foundations to help them ramp up the organization and will allow them to broaden their reach and scope in future years. Public support is approximately 20%, which is well above the 10% minimum, and is below their 2021 percentage by approximately 5%. The reason there is a decrease in 2022 is due to generous funding from one private foundation who continues to support their overall mission and program expansion costs.Student Voice's support for the five-year period ended December 31, 2022 came from a variety of unrelated individuals, organizations, and foundations. They continue to seek a broader base of support, including working with local businesses to enable employee giving. The population served by Student Voice, Inc. consists of students who tend to be young, and therefore do not have the means to give significant amounts, so gifts from this population are small. The Student Voice, Inc. board is comprised of a group of students and educational leaders from a variety of lived experiences in the United States school system and in the field of educational equity, representing a broad cross-section of the community. The board members are spread throughout the United States, representing multiple geographic areas, and cultural backgrounds.Student Voice, Inc. provides services to the general public by creating opportunities for students to address educational equity throughout the educational nonprofit field and the public education system by participation in our various programs. Educational equity is a social justice concern that impacts everyone.Student Voice, Inc. works with a number of school systems, school administrators, and student leaders who participate in their various programs including Student Voice Strategies, a paid partnership with school systems and other entities interested in learning from their team how to elevate youth voices in their own mission-driven educational efforts.Student Voice, Inc. conducted nine different programs in 2022, seven programs that were continued from 2020 and two programs that were continued from 2021, as presented on Part III of the Form 990. In September 2022, they engaged outside contractors to assist with evaluation of the effectiveness of their programs in advancing the organizations mission and paused some programming as part of this discovery process around programming, operations, and structure.
