Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Charitable: The mission of Blackbelt Benefit Group (BBG) is to create, promote and sustain solutions that provide a better quality of life in Alabama's Blackbelt Region to keep talented local residents here and to attract new residents and new opportunities to the area. To accomplish this, BBG 1) provides high-quality local programs and events that improve the local quality of life and 2) provides grant funding to other local community organizations that provide complementary programming, ensuring our grant dollars are spent on holistic community solutions designed improve the quality of life for Alabama's Blackbelt and its residents. BBG envisions a healthy, educated, revitalized, growing Blackbelt that provides better educational, economic and cultural opportunities for residents while attracting new and returning visitors who will become cultural ambassadors for a growing, healthy, strong and revitalized Alabama Blackbelt.

The organization educates and raises awareness about various issues affecting the community such as homelessness, domestic violence, and children's rights. We organize quarterly community focused events such as: Art/Music Festival, Cultural/Heritage Day, Sports Day, BBQ cook-offs, etc. At the events we have information on various community needs such as homelessness, domestic violence abuse and services for children from broken homes. Information is also available on our website. We initially began our program in Dallas/Perry County, AL and will expand to other counties within the blackbelt region of Alabama. Some of our above mentioned events are free and others are ticketed. We have 200-300 people to attend each event. Funds raised are donated to the following but limited to 501c3 organizations that focus on services for homeless, domestic abuse, children's services and protecting the overall local community.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The majority of The Black Belt of Alabama is classified as a food dessert. Selma, AL is considered the "Queen City" of the Black Belt because it was at the center of commerce during the days when the Black Belt was in its prime state, namely because of agriculture. Selma is still the center of the Black Belt, and Dallas County is the most populated county in the Black Belt, barring Montgomery, yet there is still an extremely high rate of poverty and lack of healthy food. Not only that, but Selma has fallen victim to a steady population decline over the last several years, partly due to segregation.Blackbelt Benefit Group is attempting to lift these burdens on our community in a number of ways, but first and foremost, by bringing to the table Grow Selma. Grow Selma is a diverse group organized to take care of everyday duties at Mill Village Community Garden & Food Park. Its goals include growing the Selma community and growing sustainable food, and we are starting in Mill Village. Mill Village is a racially diverse, poverty stricken neighborhood that surrounds an old cotton mill that was later turned into a Phillies Cigar factory. The factory closed 7-8 years ago, and the neighborhood seems to have gone with it. There are run-down houses and vacant lots, but there is hope. The neighborhood seems very interested in what we have going on and we want to continue to get them involved in our sustainable agriculture. We aim to educate young and old in new and traditional ways of growing food. We will teach them about sustainability for a better environment and improved local economics; all the while, providing camaraderie and improving their health by encouraging healthy eating. We want to show the impact of local food on the economy by showing kids how to grow and sell food, and we also want to teach them compassion by growing it and donating it to the needy. This will be a place where people can come to relax and enjoy nature without leaving the city limits. At the same time, this will be a place of business, where our farm manager can sell to local restaurants and school cafeterias in order to help pay the bills for our everyday operations. As long as people need food, they will need to know where it comes from and how it is grown. There seems to be a lost art of farming and providing for oneself. Many have forgotten how to work with their community to provide for their families. When people learn how to work together, grow, and rise out of poverty, they will teach others how to do it. We hope to continue this independent thought process through all children.$3,000$3,000
