Mission and Program Overview

Mission

We cultivate a new generation of farmers and food leaders, and develop viable employment and meaningful careers through the collaboration of the farming and military communities. We believe that veterans possess the unique skills and character needed to strengthen rural communities and create sustainable food systems. We believe that agriculture offers purpose, opportunity, and physical and psychological benefits. Farmer veteran coalition was formed to help at-risk veterans as they re-enter civilian society by connecting them with meaningful and stable career opportunities in the agricultural sector, and to help veterans who are suffering from particularly severe combat-related injuries to locate services and therapy options that will enable them to thrive.

The mission of the farmer veteran coalition is mobilizing veterans to feed america. Farmer veteran coalition was formed to help at-risk veterans as they re- enter civilian society by connecting them with meaningful and stable career opportunities in the agricultural sector, and to help veterans who are suffering from particularly severe combat-related injuries to locate effective services and therapy options, with a particular emphasis on agricultural and other nature-based therapy modalities, that will enable them to recover to the fullest extent possible and lead successful and productive lives. Fvc believes that connecting disabled and at-risk veterans with job opportunities in the agricultural sector helps to simultaneously address two current and pressing social issues.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

A major focus is training veteran farmers to learn marketing skills. Former marines mark and denise beyers of beyers maple farm in new york were certified by fvc as the first homegrown by heroes farmers outside of the state of kentucky, where the label was originally launched. Homegrown by heroes is a labeling campaign initiated to promote agricultural products produced by veterans. Fvc certifies farmers and trains veterans in the marketing of their products under this label. Fvc has certified more than 100 farmers from 40 states. In october an agreement was signed between the illinois department of agriculture and fvc allowing for the use of the homegrown by heroes label in conjunction with the state's illinois products mark. Ohio also signed on to promote homegrown by heroes with producers in its state as well.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Include additional queries about a veterans' military and farming history. From that date until december 31, an addtional 1,250 new veterans joined fvc, bringing our membership to over 3,500, half of whom joined in 2014 alone. November brought 200 people to drake university in iowa for the first national farmer veteran stakeholders conference. Deputy secretary of agriculture krysta harden delivered the keynote address in which she named conference attendee karis gutter the usda's first military veterans agricultural liaison.

IRS990/Desc0TRAINING & EDUCATION: FARMER VETERAN COALITION PROVIDES TRAINING OR ASSISTS VETERANS WITH TRAINING RELATED TO AGRIBUSINESS. FVC HAS PARTNERED WITH VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS TO ACHIEVE THIS PURPOSE. IN SEPTEMBER, FVC PARTNER ORGANIZATION NATIONAL AGRABILITY PROJECT ANNOUNCED THE HIRING OF COLONEL CINDRA CHASTAIN AS THE FARMER VETERAN AGRABILITY COORDINATOR. CHASTAIN DEPLOYED TO AFGHANISTAN FROM 2009-10 AS DEPUTY COMMANDER OF THE 1-19TH AGRIBUSINESS DEVELOPMENT TEAM. IN JULY, FVC EXPANDED ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH NATURAL FOOD HOLDINGS OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA. THEIR PREMIER LINE NIMAN RANCH IS HELPING VETERAN FARMERS LAUNCH PORK PRODUCTION OPERATIONS.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1A MAJOR FOCUS IS TRAINING VETERAN FARMERS TO LEARN MARKETING SKILLS.
