| KELEA FOUNDATION HAS HISTORICALLY WORKED TO MAKE THE OCEAN AND SPORTS ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE IN MAUI. THIS INCLUDES SEVERAL UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS, PARTICULARLY THOSE LIVING WITH DISABILITIES. WE SOURCE AND USE ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT TO HELP PEOPLE ACCESS MAUI REGARDLESS OF THEIR MOBILITY OR COMMUNICATION TYPES. SINCE THE 2023 MAUI WILDFIRES, WE BEGAN ORGANIZING A DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT DRIVE AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM AND HAVE PARTNERED WITH ALOHA INDEPENDENT LIVING, RED CROSS, FEMA, DOH, 'DISABILITY HUI'(NEWLY FORMED) AND ADAPTIVE MAUI TO ENSURE THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN DISPLACED AND ARE LIVING WITH A DISABILITY ARE GETTING THE EQUIPMENT THEY NEED TO LIVE AND MOVE SAFELY. THROUGH OUR PARTNERSHIPS, WE DISTRIBUTE DONATED WHEELCHAIRS, WALKERS, SHOWER CHAIRS, COMMODES AND OTHER DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT TO THOSE IN NEED. ADDITIONALLY WE SUPPORT THIS LARGE COMMUNITY WITH SOCIAL SERVICE SUPPORT SUCH AS SSDI PAYMENT CARD REPLACEMENT, PHYSICAL AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY REFERRALS AND VISION AND DENTAL REFERRALS AS NAVIGATION SERVICES. WE FOLLOW UP WITH EACH SURVIVOR TO ENSURE THEY DO NOT FALL THROUGH THE CRACKS. MANY OF THE SURVIVORS WE ARE CURRENTLY SERVING ARE ALSO PART OF THE FORMERLY HOUSE LESS COMMUNITY AND OR ARE ELDERLY WHO NEED MEDICAL ADVOCACY AND RECOVERY RESOURCE NAVIGATION SUPPORT. WE HAVE SOURCED LARGE QUANTITIES OF EQUIPMENT AND HAVE A GROWING TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS. WE HAVE RECEIVED FUNDING TO SUPPORT A DISABILITY HUB THAT WILL SERVE AS A CENTRAL MEETING POINT FOR THE NEXT THREE YEAR AS WELL AS A STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION POINT FOR VARIOUS NEEDED EQUIPMENT. THE COMMUNITY WILL HAVE ACCESS TO PROVIDERS AND CASE NAVIGATORS THROUGH THIS HUB AND GIVE THOSE PROVIDERS A BASE CAMP TO WORK FROM. SO FAR WE HAVE WORKED WITH OVER 150 INDIVIDUALS AND ARE CONTINUALLY IDENTIFYING MORE NEEDS. INDIVIDUALS THAT NEED SUPPORT AND EQUIPMENT ARE IN THE HUNDREDS. MANY PEOPLE WHO NEEDED CONSISTENT MEDICAL SUPPORT AND MOBILITY EQUIPMENT TO BE SAFE HAVE ALREADY BENEFITED FROM OUR SERVICES. WE HAVE A LOCATION IN CENTRAL MAUI THAT WILL MEET ALL OF OUR NEEDS AND IS ACCESSIBLE. THE COMMUNITY SPACE IS STAFFED BY VOLUNTEERS AND COMMUNITY AGENCIES WORKING TOGETHER TO PROVIDE SUPPORT SERVICES. THIS COMMUNITY SPACE IS ALSO A SPACE TO COME TOGETHER AND BUILD COMMUNITY AS WE HEAL. THE IMPACT OF THIS SPACE HAS BEEN TREMENDOUS. KELEA FOUNDATION WAS THE ONLY NON PROFIT ON MAUI WILLING AND ABLE TO RECEIVE MASSIVE SHIPMENTS OF MEDICAL EQUIPMENT DONATIONS FROM AGENCIES ACROSS THE U.S. SINCE THE FIRE, WE HAVE RECEIVED 17,489 PIECES OF DURABLE AND CONSUMABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES AS WELL AS OVER 875 PIECES OF EXTENDED SIZED CLOTHING TO BE DISTRIBUTED TO MAUI FIRE SURVIVORS. THANKS TO THE SUPPORT OF GRANTS WE WERE ABLE TO RECEIVE THE SHIPMENTS AT OUR LOCATIONS, UNPACK AND ORGANIZE THEM, STORE THEM AND DISTRIBUTE THEM TO LOCAL INDIVIDUALS, ORGANIZATIONS, COMMUNITY HUBS AND LEADERS AS WELL AS PROVIDE SIGNIFICANT SUPPORT TO BOTH RED CROSS AND FEMA. WE HAVE DISTRIBUTED OVER 241 PIECES OF DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND OVER 15,000 PIECES OF CONSUMABLE MEDICAL SUPPLIES SUCH AS ADULT DIAPERS. KELEA FOUNDATION CONTINUES TO SUPPORT SURVIVORS AS THEY TRANSITION THROUGH THE RECOVERY PROCESS, MOVING FROM SHELTERS TO LONGER TERM HOUSING SOLUTIONS. NEEDS CHANGE AS HOUSING CHANGES AND WE ARE WORKING TO ANTICIPATE AND MEET THOSE EVER CHANGING NEEDS WITH EACH STEP IN THIS PROCESS. IN MAY, IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER COMMUNITY PARTNERS, KELEA FOUNDATION HOSTED A LADIES CLOTHING "SWAP" WHERE WOMEN COULD GATHER, SOCIALIZE AND GET MUCH NEED CLOTHING IN EXTENDED SIZES (SIZE XXL-7XL). WE CONTINUE TO DISTRIBUTE THESE RESOURCES THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY, COLLABORATING WITH LEADERS IN THE SOAMOAN, TONGAN AND NATIVE HAWAIIAN COMMUNITIES. WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH NAME BRANDS THAT MANUFACTURE EXTENDED SIZED CLOTHING TO HELP SURVIVORS REPLACE THEIR CLOTHING WITH NEW AND SPECIALTY ITEMS SUCH AS EXERCISE CLOTHING AND WORK CLOTHING. WE CONTINUE TO ADVOCATE FOR SURVIVORS WITH DISABILITIES AND COMPLEX MEDICAL ISSUES, WORKING WITH HOMELESS SHELTERS, FEMA, MAKAI FOUNDATION, MAUI RAPID RESPONSE AS WELL AS OUR COMMUNITY LONG TERM RECOVERY GROUP TO HELP TROUBLESHOOT ISSUES IN ACCESS AS WELL AS HELPING THEM NAVIGATE THE SYSTEM WITH MORE EASE. “The mission of kelea foundation is to support and uplift the community of maui through inclusive and accessible support services and activities vision statement”
“Kelea foundation has historically worked to make the ocean and sports accessible to everyone in maui. We continue to advocate for survivors with disabilities and complex medic”
