PART III, LINE 1, ORGANIZATION'S MISSION STATEMENT:

The us-china strong (uscs) foundation's mission is to strengthen american capacity to understand china through mandarin language learning, study in china, and other programs. The foundation engages us and chinese government, business, and academic communities to expand the number and diversity of americans studying abroad in china and learning mandarin. We invest in strategic partnerships at the state and local level, and empower student ambassadors to promote the foundation's mission at the grassroots level. Uscs enjoys the strong support of u.s. And chinese private and public sector partners. Us-china strong leads three signature campaigns that focus on supporting the full spectrum of american youth, spanning from our youngest students through young professionals entering china-related careers. 1 million strong: 1 million strong is a national campaign to expand fivefold mandarin language learning in us k-12 schools from approximately 200,000 to 1 million by 2020. Presidents barack obama and xi jinping announced this ambitious effort in 2015. 100k strong: announced in 2009, 100k strong is a presidential initiative whose initial goal of seeing 100,000 americans studying in china by 2014 was surpassed. Us-china strong continues to work with both washington and beijing to expand and diversify us study abroad to china. Knowledge and careers: the foundation is developing programs that deepen knowledge and understanding of china, connect knowledge to action, and provide guidance to help young people in china-related careers, such as the china careers summit which was designed to introduce american undergraduate and graduate students to a broad array of careers in which their skills and china knowledge are in demand. Work is also underway on new programs such as professional mentorship; training by experienced practitioners in real-life, business and diplomatic problem-solving, multi-generational, interdisciplinary project to uncover and analyze linguistic, cultural, behavioral and other obstacles to u.s.-china understanding; and leadership training for student-led china-focused organizations on american campuses. Backed by high-level support from both washington and beijing, us governors and mebers of congress, and american and chinese business leaders, us-china strong is committed to dramatically increasing the number and diversity of young americans learning mandarin and gaining meaningful experience in us-china relations. By simultaneously engaging prominent us and chinese students and stakeholders, us-china strong is shaping a more constructive future for us-china relations.

Part III, Line 4A

In 2014, the initial goal of seeing 100,000 students study abroad in china was surpassed. The foundation continues to build upon its success, working with partners across the country to raise awareness of the importance of study abroad, increase the diversity of students participating in programs and working with corporate sponsors to increase the number of scholarships. Specifically, the us-china strong foundation works closely with a group of 20 signature partners organizations to accomplish our goals. These organizations work with the foundation to advance our core mission of promoting the us-china strategic relationship through study abroad. Partners include: american association of state colleges and universities; afs intercultural programs; alliance for global education; americans promoting study abroad; american councils for international education; american university; ciee; confucius institute in chicago; china institute; delaware state department of education; hispanic association of colleges and universities; johns hopkins university school of advanced international studies; one world now!; school year abroad; thurgood marshall college fund; ucla's confucius institute; the university of iowa; utah state office of education; xavier university of louisiana; yale-china association; the foundation also runs the us-china strong foundation student ambassador program. Each year, the foundation selects 75-100 american students to serve as ambassadors on the grassroots level. These students represent the diversity of america, one of our nation's greatest strengths. They have studies in china and have a deep understanding of chinese culture and history. As ambassadors, these students not only share their transformative china experiences, but also play a vital role in furthering the foundation's mission. Announced in 2015 by presidents barack obama and xi jinping, the goal of 1 million strong is to grow the next generation of leaders who have a deeper understanding of china by creating a pipeline of china-savvy employees in a range of critical industries, and ensuring that us students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to gain china-related skills. To make 1 million strong a reality, us-china strong is working with a bipartisan coalition of governors, mayors and school superintendents across the country, as well as with education and technology leaders. Led by a steering committee of experts, a task force assists the foundation in identifying implementation partners and offering creative solutions to reaching the 1 million student goal.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, the foundation is a nonprofit organization and is exempt from federal taxes on income other than net unrelated business income. No provision for federal or state income taxes is required for the year ended december 31, 2019, as the foundation had no taxable net unrelated business income. The foundation follows the authoritative guidance relating to accounting for uncertainty in income taxes included in accounting standards codification topic 740-10, income taxes. These provisions provide consistent guidance for the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an entity's financial statements and prescribe a threshold of "more likely than not" for recognition and derecognition of tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. The foundation performed an evaluation of uncertain tax positions for the year ended december 31, 2019 and determined that there were no matters that would require recognition in the financial statements or that may have any effect on its tax-exempt status. At december 31, 2019, the statute of limitations for tax years ended december 31, 2016 through 2018 remains open with the u.s. Federal jurisdiction or the various stated and local jurisdictions in which the foundation files tax returns. It is the foundation's policy to recognize interest and/or penalties relate to uncertain tax positions, if any, in income tax expenses.
