Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The groundtruth project, inc. (the organization), a nonprofit corporation, was founded to restore journalism from the ground up by supporting the next generation of journalists through field reporting that serves under-covered corners of the united states and the world. The organization focuses on training and developing the craft of journalism and the power of accountability reporting. While meeting the challenges of communicating fair, trusted news in an age where it sometimes feels truth itself is under attack, the organization seeks to support on-the-ground journalism that enlightens and informs with a spirit of public service.

The groundtruth project is dedicated to training a new generation of international correspondents and to adding increased knowledge and understanding on issues of social justice including human rights, freedom of expression, emerging democracies, the environment, religious affairs and global health. We are a registered nonprofit headquartered in boston, massachusetts. Headed by globalpost co-founder charles m. Sennott, our team is committed to online publishing that enlightens and informs. We focus on narrative storytelling about issues that matter for an increasingly interconnected world and we search for solutions to these issues.at the core of what we do is the idea of "ground truth," which, put simply, means being on the ground to tell the story. The origin of the word actually comes from nasa, and refers to part of the calibration process used in satellite imagery. When nasa measures something with a satellite, an employee on the ground takes the same measurement. That human measu

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

Implementation of asc 958 not-for-profit entities, see xii line 1 408,333.

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 1:

For the year ended 12/31/13, the groundtruth project(the "organization") prepared unaudited financial statements without implementing asc 958 not-for-profit entities, as the organization had not received approval of its 501(c)3 exemption status. Under the terms of the agreements of the grants they received prior to 12/31/13 these grants would need to be returned if the organization did not receive 501c(3) status, as such the organization treated them as deferred revenue on the financials prepared for the period ending 12/31/13. On 8/1/2014 the organization received approval of its tax exempt status and applied asc 958 retroactivity. All grants received in prior years have been included in schedule a and b in the current year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

No provision is made for income taxes as the organization is exempt from federal and state income taxes under internal revenue code section 501(c)(3). The organization's forms 990 generally remain subject to examination for three years after filing.
