Part X : FIN48 Footnote

“Zara Aina complies with the provisions of ASC 740, Income Taxes. ASC 740 requires that a tax position be recognized or derecognized based on a "more likely than not" threshold. This applies to positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. The adoption of this guidance did not have an impact on Zara Aina's financial statements, as management believes that there are no uncertain tax positions within its financial statements. Zara Aina has processes presently in place to ensure the maintenance of its tax-exempt status; to identify and report unrelated income; determine its filing and tax obligations in jurisdictions for which it has nexus; and to review other matters that may be considered tax positions. Zara Aina's Forms 990, Return of Organization Exempt for Income Tax, for the years ended December 31, 2017, 2018 and 2019 are subject to examination by the IRS, generally for three years after they were filed.”

IRS990/Desc0Mobile Library: Launched in 2016 in partnership with the UK-based Vape Club, Zara Ainas Mobile Library project distributes useful books to rural villages across four regions of Madagascar. The books focus on practical knowledge such as ways to improve agricultural practices, family relations and health, environmental issues, sexual health, DIY and trades. In 2018, the Mobile Library continued to distribute seeds and fruit trees to participating communities, along with literature about care and cultivation.When the Library is not actively engaged in a tour, the van is used by Zara Aina staff to transport the Youth Company and Zara Aina oversees the overall operation of the Program and provides administrative support to Library staff.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Youth Company & Antananarivo Clubhouse: As Madagascar and the entire world struggled in the face of the COVID-19 cri-sis, the Clubhouse had to reduce operations in 2020, as Madagascar went in and out of lockdown, and schools closed and reopened. Thankfully, cases and deaths remained lower in Madagascar than many feared, and the kids and staff and their families remained safe and healthy through 2020. Whenever the kids could come to the Clubhouse our theater and show-building programming was held for the 15 students in Years 1-4. The Staff took on brand new projects in 2020, teaming with new partners such as Rotary International, the Team Foun-dation, and Teach for Madagascar, which produced a new childrens book called Diary Nofy with Zara Aina Staff and students.Tutoring and test prep and English and French classes continued at the Club-house in 2020, and for the first time ever, 8 students passed their national ex-ams--making them eligible for High School, which is free. On top of that, the first two students in Zara Ainas history passed their Baccalaureate Exams, making them eligible for college.Vocational programming continued for the 4th Year students, with students taught to make paper bags out of recycling, which can then be sold. As they learned this potential new business venture they were simultaneously taught proper accounting and money management--how to handle personal finances, and run one's own business.Zara Ainas work with Teach for Madagascar and the Team Foundation in 2020 concluded with students and staff recording an audiobook for the first time, and creating a touring stage show to go alongside it. To conclude their work with Ro-tary International in 2020, Zara Aina students created and performed a showcompletely in French- at a big Rotary Fundraiser.In our 2020 End of Year Fundraising Campaign, we completed a Capital Cam-paign raising money to finally build a permanent Zara Aina Center on the piece of land we own in Antananarivo

ASC 740 requires that a tax position be recognized or derecognized based on a "more likely than not" threshold. This applies to positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. The adoption of this guidance did not have an impact on Zara Aina's financial statements, as management believes that there are no uncertain tax positions within its financial statements. Zara Aina has processes presently in place to ensure the maintenance of its tax-exempt status; to identify and report unrelated income; determine its filing and tax obligations in jurisdictions for which it has nexus; and to review other matters that may be considered tax positions. Zara Aina's Forms 990, Return of Organization Exempt for Income Tax, for the years ended December 31, 2017, 2018 and 2019 are subject to examination by the IRS, generally for three years after they were filed.

Funds are administered via the Charities Aid Foundation and distributed to Zara Aina to be used for the Mobile Library Project. As part of the relationship with CAF, the Mobile Library Project and Zara Aina Madagascar and Zara Aina US produce quarterly reports that detail all program expenses against funds received, descriptions of activities by region and visit, and general information and understandings from each visit.
