IRS990/Desc0Each year, the ?! Careyes Foundation invites a series of Mexican and international visual artists for a residency that generally lasts one month, including studio workspace and materials. The program focuses on collaborations with local schools to produce workshops with children. The program is essential to the cultural exchange that the Foundation promotes. Additionally, artists have the option of staging an exhibition, discussion, performance, or screening for the community, allowing diffusion of the Foundation's programs around the world. In 2016, the artist Adria Julia held his residency from July through August, and 23 children participated in the workshop. The Foundation was unable to invite artists earlier in the year due to the lasting effects of Hurricane Patricia. In addition to the expenses being reported in Part IX of this return, there were in-kind gifts of $7,856.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0For more than 34 years, the Careyes Community has worked to protect sea turtles nesting in the area. In 1983, only 11 turtles were laying eggs in the region. By 2016, 1,330,062 sea turtles of four species hatched on Careyes beaches and made it safely to the ocean, and the ?! Careyes Foundation has supported this effort since 2013. A team of four watchmen patrolled the Careyes beaches all year round to ensure the protection of turtles and their nests from predators. In 2016, 1,043 turtles nested and 79,035 turtles hatched and made it to the sea. A special keeper in Playa Tapeixte was hired for five months directly by the Foundation to camp and guard the beach due to an increase in nesting Hawksbill turtles. In addition to the expenses being reported in Part IX of this return, there were in-kind gifts of $34,257.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0The ?! Careyes Foundation has produced the first two books in a series of custom-made English-Spanish textbooks, tailored specifically to the educational needs of primary school children in rural areas. This series and accompanying curriculum will provide them with the necessary tools to become productive and successful members of their communities. Through this program, 1,200 children in 10 villages receive weekly lessons delivered by volunteer English teachers. Our Sports and Recreation Program (SRP) also serves the same communities, with the goal of promoting an active lifestyle and developing values such as discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. Under the supervision of a professional player, the Foundation opened our first Bike Polo School in 2014 and a second school in 2015. Between the two schools, over 60 children from five villages participated in the sport in 2016. In 2016, the SRP expanded to offer bimonthly community bike rides to encourage physical fitness while instilling an appreciation for nature in children and adults. 118 children and 46 adults participated in these trips in 2016.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0More than 44,000 patients from rural villages have been treated at the Careyes Clinic since opening in 1999, at little to no cost. The clinic is a non-profit civil association created by the Careyes residents. The ?! Careyes Foundation has lent its support in fundraising to meet their goals and made donations to the clinic in January and March 2016. In April 2016, the boards of the ?! Careyes Foundation and the Careyes Clinic decided to dissolve their partnership, due to the clinic introducing a new fundraising structure that no longer aligned with the mission of the ?! Careyes Foundation.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1IN OCTOBER 2015, HURRICANE PATRICIA DEVASTATED THE TEN VILLAGES SERVED BY THE ?! CAREYES FOUNDATION. WITH THAT IN MIND, THE FOUNDATION SET UP A HURRICANE PATRICIA FUND WITH THE PURPOSE OF 1) BUILDING AN EMERGENCY SHELTER AT A PRIMARY SCHOOL SITE IN EACH OF THE TEN VILLAGES, AND 2) FULLY EQUIPPING EACH OF THESE SHELTERS WITH ALL SUPPLIES NECESSARY IN THE EVENT OF A FUTURE NATURAL DISASTER.FOR THIS PROJECT, THE ?! CAREYES FOUNDATION IS WORKING VERY CLOSELY WITH THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT. ONCE THE GOVERNMENT AGENCIES COMPLETED THEIR REPAIRS TO EACH PRIMARY SCHOOL, THE FOUNDATION INSTALLED HURRICANE PANELS (REMOVABLE STEEL SHIELDS) TO BE PLACED OVER THE WINDOWS OF THE CLASSROOMS INDICATED FOR SHELTER USE DURING A STORM, AND ALSO ENSURED THAT EACH SCHOOL HAD A FUNCTIONING WATER TANK OF SUFFICIENT SIZE TO SUPPLY AMPLE FILTERED DRINKING WATER. THE FOUNDATION COMPLETED CONSTRUCTION ON THE EMERGENCY SHELTERS IN THREE VILLAGES BY THE END OF 2016. EACH SHELTER IS FULLY EQUIPPED WITH ALL SUPPLIES NECESSARY IN THE EVENT OF A NATURAL DISASTER, INCLUDING COLLAPSIBLE COTS FOR SLEEPING, AN ELECTRICAL GENERATOR, A FIRST AID KIT WITH MEDICAL SUPPLIES, AND AN EMERGENCY KIT. THE EMERGENCY KIT CONTAINS AXES, PICKAXES, MACHETES, AND A CHAINSAW, AS WELL AS ADDITIONAL WATER FILTERS AND BATTERY-POWERED LANTERNS WITH RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES AND BATTERY CHARGERS. IN ADDITION, A SMALL AMOUNT OF MONEY HAS BEEN ALLOCATED FOR USE IN EACH COMMUNITY AT THE MOMENT THAT A HURRICANE HITS, TO BE USED FOR SUPPLIES THAT CANNOT BE PURCHASED IN ADVANCE (GASOLINE FOR THE GENERATOR AND FOOD FOR THE RESIDENTS).
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc2In April 2016, the ?! Careyes Foundation joined forces with the Bergman Cathedra of the National University, Cinema23, and the Morelia Film Festival to produce the second annual special intensive workshop on acting and film for young actors and filmmakers from the Mexican and Latin American scene, guided by Oscar-winning director Pawel Pawlikowski. This lab is becoming a space of reflection and experimentation for directors and actors to construct communication, dialogue, and creation paths in the field of film acting. The lab was a hugely successful event that provided significant international exposure to the ?! Careyes Foundation. The 2015 workshop attracted a great deal of public interest and led to a partnership with Cinepolis, who donated projectors and a sound system to equip a movie theater in Careyes that opened in April 2016. Using this new theater, the ?! Careyes Foundation launched a new Cinema & Community Program in October 2016, in which we host bimonthly events for local school children to expose them to the cinematic arts by offering film screenings on a variety of subjects, from children's entertainment to education and ecology. These events allow us to identify potential interest in workshops on cinema for the children of the communities. Already, two local students are learning new skills and gaining experience through creating and updating media materials for the Foundation. In addition to the expenses being reported in Part IX of this return, there were in-kind gifts of $35,200.
