The salute to reading program is provided in three elementary schools, tinker, ballast point and chiaramonte elementary, which educate a large percentage of macdill air force base personnel's children. Throughout the school year (september through may) nine students, one student from grades 3-5 from each school, are selected on a monthly basis to participate in the program. Students are selected according to criteria developed by the reading coaches and administrators at the respective schools. Those students are invited to a celebration with vincent where they are recognized for their accomplishments while taking home the danny dogtags books and other prizes. The goal of the salute to reading program is to encourage academic success among elementary-aged students by emphasizing the importance of literacy. By offering a fun incentive such as meeting vincent and enjoying a celebration, students are encouraged to reach their reading goals.
