Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The biotechnology greenhouse of southeastern pennsylvania was established with funds from the commonwealth of pennsylvania's share of the national tobacco settlement to accelerate growth of the life sciences industry by transforming the southeast pennsylvania region's strength in biomedical research and development into commercial opportunities. Approximately $25 million of the original government grant funding has been dedicated for pre-seed or "gap" funding for promising therapeutic, biomedical device and related technology companies, in a program called the greenhouse fund. The greenhouse fund is designed to move promising scientific projects out of the laboratory and into commercial opportunities. Additional funds were set aside for initiatives to increase the region's strengths in biomedical informatics and clinical trials.

Bioadvance was established in 2001 as one of three life sciences greenhouses funded with a share of pennsylvania's national tobacco settlement revenues, to promote human health by supporting biomedical innovation in the southeastern pa region. Bioadvance dedicated $25 million of the original grant funding for pre-seed and early-stage funding to help move technologies to the next stage of development and to support the initiatives intended to increase the region's strength in biomedical informatics and clinical trials. Since the original grant funding was expended, bioadvance continues to support emerging life sciences companies in southeastern pa and the surrounding mid-atlantic region that are focused on technologies to improve human health. As of june 30, 2020, a total of $49.1 million has been invested by bioadvance in 93 companies and academic technologies.

Additional Explanations

FORM 990; ITEM B; AMENDED RETURN

990 return was amended to report omitted officer compensation information for director (6) greg harriman on page 7, part viii and page 10 part ix, lines 5. During calendar year 2017, officer greg terminated his employment and later began working for the organization as a consultant. Because he was board officer but not a voting member, nor did he any longer receive a w-2, he was not listed on page 7 due to an oversight. Page 7 part vii has been updated to report $77,314 earned as a consultant and reported on form 1099 for calendar year 2019. The officer compensation on page 10 part ix, line 5 has been increased by and the other professional fees line 11g has been decreased by $69,535, representing the fiscal year consultant earnings by the officer included in col (b). There was no change to total functional expenses.

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

Unrealized gain on portfolio investments 1,889,838.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The internal revenue service has classified bioadvance as exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. U.s. Gaap requires management to evaluate tax positions taken and recognize a tax liability, if bioadvance has taken an uncertain tax position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by a government authority. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by bioadvance and has concluded that as of june 30, 2020 and 2019, there are no uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability or disclosure in the consolidated financial statements. Bioadvance recognizes interest and penalties associated with income taxes, if any, as part of interest and administrative expenses. There were no income tax related interest and penalties recorded for either of the years ended june 30, 2020 or 2019.

PART XI, LINE 4B - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Realized gain on cash investments 122,983. Realized gain on portfolio investments 9,357,335.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE HAS CLASSIFIED BIOADVANCE AS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAXES UNDER SECTION 501(C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE.
