Since 2008, healthy vision week has encouraged making a child's vision a priority by providing free vision screenings to young children in partnership with dozens of eye care professionals in the region, who donated their in office services for the screenings. Almost 1,800 children to date received free vision screenings through this program. However, based on statistics compiled during the first four years of screenings, npef noted an on-going, more broad based need for vision screenings in young children, as well as recognized that the program was not effectively reaching our socioeconomically underserved student population.

Activity 3

After a year of research and development, npef launched northern plains eye foundation western south dakota lions children's vision screening initiative (cvsi), with a goal of making vision screenings accessible to more cildren, leading to early detection, timely diagnosis and appropriate intervention. Through a unique partner-supported strategy, npef and local lions club volunteers trained in the use of new technology, offer free children's vision screenings at daycares, pre-schools and elementary schools. Comprehensive screening results are documented and mailed to parents of children screened, which indicate either no follow-up exam is required at this time (but routine eye exams by an eye care professional are strongly encouraged, since a screening does not take the place of a complete exam), or a complete eye exam is recommended, as well as why the child is being referred to an eye care professional. In the case of children who require a complete eye exam, additional information is provided as to the meaning of conditions identified on the screening result, eye care professionals in the region and agencies that may provide assistance to families in need. When the child receives an eye exam, an evaluation form is completed by the eye care professional and provided to npef. In our first year of cvsi, which began in may 2012 with a pilot screening, our goal was to screen 1,000 children. Long-term, our strategy is to expand cvsi state-wide through partnerships with the eye care industry, donors and businesses in order to sustain this important and worthwhile initiative.
