Part 1, Line 1

We believe in the power of food to unite people and to lay foundations for healthy communities. Growgood inc. (growgood) has transformed a 1.5 acre vacant parcel of land adjacent to the salvation army's bell shelter into an urban farm providing fresh produce to the shelter's kitchen; a therapeutic green space for spiritual and emotional healing; and employment opportunities for the shelter's residents.

Part III, Line 1

Growgood is a los angeles based non-profit creating urban agricultural programs to empower people and transform communities. We believe in the power of food to unite people and to lay foundations for healthy communities. Growgood works with the salvation army's bell shelter to maintain a vibrant 1.5-acre urban farm adjacent to the shelter. The bell shelter is one of the largest homeless shelters in the country and is home to approximately 500 men and women, approximately 30% of whom are veterans. Growgood is located in the city of bell-a "food desert" according to the u.s. Department of agriculture. In exchange for land and utilities, growgood delivers fresh, nutritious produce to the shelter kitchen, which serves more than 6,000 meals to residents each week on a limited budget. The unique combination of therapy, nutrition, and real-world commercial pressures make the growgood model an innovative way to rehabilitate and launch the homeless population back into the workforce in a step-by-step and guided way. Growgood was founded on three central precepts: to provide a variety of nutritious, fresh produce to the shelter kitchen; to provide a therapeutic green space for spiritual and emotional healing; and to provide job training and meaningful resume building employment opportunities for the shelter residents.

USING THE FARM HARVEST, STUDENTS LEARN SKILLS NEEDED TO WORK IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY. THE SHELTER KITCHEN IS THEIR LABORATORY, AND THEY PREPARE INGREDIENTS AND DISHES FOR PEOPLE WHO EAT IN THE (CON SCH O) DINING HALL. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF BOTH A CHEF AND INSTRUCTOR, 32 STUDENTS BEGAN THE 12-WEEK PROGRAM; 21 HAVE GRADUATED. SEVERAL HAVE FOUND MEANINGFUL JOBS IN LOS ANGELES.
