GrowGood is a Los Angeles based non-profit creating urban agricultural programs to empower people and transform communities. We believe in the power of food to unite people and to lay foundations for healthy communities. GrowGood works with The Salvation Army's Bell Shelter to transform the 1.5-acre vacant parcel of land adjacent to the shelter into an urban farm. The Bell Shelter is the largest homeless shelter west of Mississippi and is home to approximately 350 men and women, approximately 30% of whom are veterans. GrowGood was founded on three central precepts: to provide a variety of nutritious, fresh produce to the Shelter's kitchen; to provide a therapeutic green space for spiritual and emotional healing; and to provide job training and meaningful resume building employment opportunities for the shelter's residents. GrowGood is located in the City of Bell-a "food desert" according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In exchange for land and utilities, GrowGood delivers fresh, nutritious produce to the shelter's kitchen, which serves over 6,000 meals to residents each week on a limited budget. The unique combination of therapy, nutrition, and real-world commercial pressures make the GrowGood model an innovative way to rehabilitate and launch the homeless population back into the workforce in a step-by-step and guided way.

IRS990/Desc0GrowGood continues to cultivate the farm, which consists of an orchard of over 50 fruit trees, 14 raised vegetable garden beds, a 1/2 -acre area of in-ground row crops, a chicken coop, and a California native plant garden filled with flowering, drought-tolerant plants-all outfitted with a state-of-the-art Netafim drip irrigation system. In 2016, 35,000-40,000 plants were transplanted to grow 82 vegetable varieties on the farm. In 2016, GrowGood delivered over 7,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce with a market value of over $20,000 to the shelter's kitchen. Our increased output is the result of hard work by our farm managers and interns, years of soil rehabilitation, and systematizing our growing and harvesting calendar. The shelter kitchen serves over 6,000 meals a week to the residents who live there. Currently, GrowGood supplies a little over half the produce the kitchen needs for all food prepared for the residents.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0In the Spring of 2016, GrowGood launched the Transitional Employment Program and provided six participants with temporary employment on the farm. Three of the six participants obtained permanent employment in the community after successfully completing the program at GrowGood. By the end of 2016, GrowGood increased its hiring capacity to five participants at any given time. GrowGood has developed many great partnerships in the local business community to help with resume building and interview skills workshops as well as community organizations that link the participants to employment opportunities such as Sunflower Farms and Brightview Landscape. For specialized training opportunities, GrowGood partners with LA Trade Tech, Slauson Southeast Occupational Center, Los angeles Unifed School District (LAUSD) Adult Education, Maxine Waters Job Training Center, and Abram Friedman Occupational Center. Several partner organizations, including LIFT, Volunteers of America Los Angeles, America's Job Center, The Salvation Army, REDF, and LA:Rise, offer placement support for the participants.

GrowGood is planning to build a 30' X 48' climate controlled greenhouses to support the garden and to grow microgreens, as well as an outdoor kitchen to prep produce, and a classroom to conduct workshop and classes. This new addition allows for year-round production and preparation of microgreens, herbs, flowers, and vegetables and creates space for workshops. GrowGood has been awarded a Conditional Use Permit from the City of Bell to build greenhouses on the farm. Construction will be underway in 2017.

We believe in the power of food to unite people and to lay foundations for healthy communities. GrowGood works with The Salvation Army's Bell Shelter to transform the 1.5-acre vacant parcel of land adjacent to the shelter into an urban farm. The Bell Shelter is the largest homeless shelter west of Mississippi and is home to approximately 350 men and women, approximately 30% of whom are veterans. GrowGood was founded on three central precepts: to provide a variety of nutritious, fresh produce to the Shelter's kitchen; to provide a therapeutic green space for spiritual and emotional healing; and to provide job training and meaningful resume building employment opportunities for the shelter's residents. GrowGood is located in the City of Bell-a "food desert" according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In exchange for land and utilities, GrowGood delivers fresh, nutritious produce to the shelter's kitchen, which serves over 6,000 meals to residents each week on a limited budget. The unique combination of therapy, nutrition, and real-world commercial pressures make the GrowGood model an innovative way to rehabilitate and launch the homeless population back into the workforce in a step-by-step and guided way.
