“Program Accomplishments:”

“Virginia Justice Initiative (VBJI) seeks to facilitate prevention and raise awareness of Human Trafficking. VBJI held 22 Community Action Meetings on the Peninsula & Southside of the Hampton Roads region, gave 28 Presentations in universities, churches, civic groups, and community events, and contacted over 700 churches to alert them to the issue and invite their partnership in combatting Human Trafficking. It was also interviewed by CBN, Local Ch. 3 and Ch. 13, Radio - The Current; The Virginian Pilot and saw release of the Cox Communications Hampton Roads Human Trafficking Documentary to raise awareness on various issues related to human trafficking.”

“Efforts to get prevention eduction into local schools resulted in opportunities to make presentations in several schools as well as the launch of The Prevention Project, anti-human trafficking curriculum, in Smithfield and Woodside High Schools.”

“Provided Specialized training to Chesapeake Fire Department's Emergency Medical Services leadership and to 60 Chesapeake Department of Social Services Adult and Juvenile Service Workers.”

“VBJI helped draft and pass two anti-human trafficking laws that provided confidentiality to human trafficking victim/survivors and the service providers helping them and providing special provisions to allow victims of trafficking to sue their traffickers.”

“Facilitated region wide anti-human trafficking and victim service efforts through meetings of the Hampton Roads Coalition Against Trafficking ("HRCAT") and statewide victims service efforts through participation in the VA Coordinated Human Trafficking Victim Support Working Group helping to develop protocols, identify services and gaps in services to strengthen victim identification and service efforts and increase prevention efforts across Hampton Roads and into Yorktown and Williamsburg and statewide. Appointed to and served on the 2016 VA House of Delegate Transportation Legislative Committee to add anti-human trafficking expertise to the study on Driving Privileges for resident aliens which prepared a special report on the issue.”

“VBJI hosted its first annual Let Justice Roll 5K Run, Walk & Family Fun Run at the Mariners Museum in Newport News to raise awareness to human trafficking in the Hampton Roads area while also raising funds to support those efforts as well as for victim services.”

“We have small teams that reach out to over 70+ businesses in areas where prostitution occurs to provide basic information about trafficking, the Red Flags, and to ask them to provide the information folder to their employees; post the National Human Trafficking Hotline number at the checkout counter and/or on its community bulletin board and/or special stickers with the National Anti-Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline in their public restrooms.”

“VBJI worked with prosecutorial offices, law enforcement and other NGOs in Newport News and Hampton to develop a Community Coordinated Response to human trafficking.”

“It launched an outreach program in a local Regional Jail helping to identify 22 victims of human trafficking and provide follow up services to four survivors as they are released in Hampton Roads - Launched companion Mail Mentoring program to participants in the jail program who were remaining in custody. VBJI victim advocates also participated in ride-alongs with the Newport News law enforcement and provided support during several sting operations with local law enforcement as well as the FBI Operation Cross Country. Awarded certificates of appreciation for VBJI's anti-human trafficking and victim service efforts by the Hampton Commonwealth Attorney's Victim Witness Office and MyHelpMyHope Foundation, Inc. Be Silent No More Campaign.”

“We held prayer meetings at two different locations weekly to undergird the organization's work and those of other ministries and agencies in our region.”
