Profile
THE Organization changed its name from The Center for Nuleadership on Urban Solutions (CNUS) to The Center for Muleadership on Human Justice and Healing (CNHJH) during FY2020. CNHJH's goal is Human Justiceto keep people from the policing and punishment systems while simultaneously divesting money from these systems to redirect to community-based, community-driven, human-centered housing, education, business, and justice solutions. This requires deep relationship-building, individual transformation and community investment, but more importantly, the honesty and bravery it takes to dismantle existing systems rooted in punishment and pain. Then it requires the confidence and skills to build new muscles and bandwidth to confront our own contradictions and to create the world we want to live in and leave for our children.

The mission of the center for nuleadership on urban solutions (cnus) is to shift the paradigm and practice of public safety, justice and accountability from criminal justice to human and healing justice, which we define as the merger of human rights and human development. We provide research, advocacy and leadership training to formerly incarcerated people, their families, communities, allies and criminal justice professionals. Cnus is the first and only independent public policy, research, training and advocacy organization designed and developed by formerlyincarcerated academics and staffed by people directly impacted by the legacy and history of criminalization in the us. In 2001, our late founder, eddie ellis, convinced open society foundation to assist in convening formerly incarcerated leaders to articulate a new vision of criminal justice based on their personal and professional experience, resulting in nuleadership policy group (2003), a national think tank later housed at medg

Human Justice is our original framework, launched in 2011. Human Justice = Human Rights + Human DevelopmentWe believe that justice cannot be achieved if the starting point is criminal. We believe that pathways to true safety and accountability is by building community generational wealth and health, together. We aim to shift the paradigm and practice of public safety from criminal justice to Human Justice. In other words, criminal justice puts the focus on things like nicer jails, police trainings, and ending cash bail (among other things). Right now, through our live-in residency at WILDSEED Community Farm & Healing Village, we provide experiences such as camping, farming training, medicine workshops, healing circles, wellness retreats, reconnection gatherings, creative space for artists, and respite for family members visiting loved ones in upstate prisons. NuLegacy nurtures the skills and provides the experiences necessary for people to live, heal, and thrive in nature and to steward land in healthy and harmonious ways. Through NuLegacy, we organized three first-time exposure and experience gatherings for a total of 160 people from the five boroughs of NYC through our organizational residency with the Wildseed Community Farm which we won in 2021. We also organized 3 camping trips for 6 Brooklyn youth who have never camped before. |

The training services are designed to provide political education, tools for daily application, and convening everyone in our resource hub, which coordinates referrals and feedback, to ensure continuity and assessment of services provided by the system. A major goal of HJTRL is to fill the gap between vision and mission alignment among activists focused on dismantling the oppressive system; service providers relying on the system for their livelihoods; community members eager for better, community-based alternatives for safety and accountability; and, most importantly, system-impacted people deserving of better from all of us. Through HJLTP, we provided over 35 trainings and workshops for credible messenger organizers, Bed-Stuy residents and youth, system stakeholders from Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice and the Kings County District Attorney's office. Our hallmark project is Communiversity which we launched in late 2021. Communiversity is our engine for educational, emotional and political edquity by locating and generating educational resources, assets (people), and opportunities within our neighborhoods and holding courses that are often only offered through higher education institutions. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 1 | The Village Apprenticeship Program (VAP) - is decolonizing workforce development and preparing workers, employers, and communities for a post-COVID world. VAP is building a community care workforce. VAP is a revolutionary training and apprenticeship program that provides workers and employers with the knowledge and skills and resources needed to build a cooperative, equitable, and vibrant village. Through VAP, we matched 10 cohort participants with mostly local and black-owned businesses. We also provided seed investment of ten thousand dollars to three black owned businesses from Brooklyn. 80% of our participants found employment that they are pursuing now as part time and full time employees, a year later. More importantly, we created a village community of people, ideas and innovations that are exploring, experimenting and actualizing what cooperative economics feels and looks like. |
