Mission

Bronxartspace is a non-profit gallery that promotes the innovative ideas of underrepresented and emerging artists and curators. Bronxartspace is dedicated to exhibiting the highest quality artwork from the bronx and around the world. Our mission is to foster dialogue around the contemporary local, national and global issues while advancing local arts education and opportunities.

Exhibitions on Body, Culture and Identity - For this project BAS has invited Wave Hill Curator Gabriel de Guzman and El Museo Curatorial Programs Coordinator Sofia Reeser del Rio to individually curate 'Being' and 'Historical Amnesia' featuring emerging and underrepresented artists from the Bronx and beyond. Both exhibitions focus on themes of the body, figure, identity, colonialism intolerance-all present concerns of international and local significance to our community. Historical Amnesia | Feb 10-Mar 24 | admission free - Forgotten histories are traced through the body and transformed into works that skew yet highlight moments of identity crisis and the politics around what is seen and what is hidden. Historical Amnesia exposes and grapples with the lasting effects of colonialism, exoticism, and intolerance on today's culture.Featuring , artists who sift through forms of loss, obscurity, and trauma by using the body as a conduit. These artists recover suppressed narratives, giving body to the hushed voices of those who have been relegated to the status of Other. The exhibition will consist of sculpture, drawings, video, installations, performance, and special catalogue with curatorial essay by Gabriel de Guzman. In addition to the performance program, there will also be an artist's talk. Being | Nov 2-Dec 14 | admission free - Curated by Sofia S. Reeser del Rio, Being looks at work that reimagines and challenges boundaries of identity physically, emotionally and geographically. Through the use of their bodies, film, interviews, flower arrangements, video and painting, these artists investigate the construction and destruction of identity.$0$35,585
Exhibitions and Community Partnerships - STATE PROPERTY | Sep 9 - Nov 20 A three-venue exhibition between Andrew Freedman Home, BronxArtSpace and Swing Space, STATE PROPERTY was a multi-disciplinary examination of American consumption of prison labor and our daily choices to purchase, condone or reject goods created in penitentiaries. The exhibition asked guests to consider more carefully what Made in the U.S.A. currently means in relation to the incarceration system and corporate outsourcing. 49 artists from the Bronx and the US participated, i Public programs consisted of film screenings and talks at BAS and AFH. BAS hosted 6 screenings followed by discussion with panelists from Close Rikers, Correctional Association of New York, Echoes of Incarceration, Just Leadership, Black Panthers, and Community Corrections for Youth, and an Artist Talk with 4 women artists exhibiting at BAS, on October 18, 6pm. In Broad Daylight: Greek Women Street Artists | May 17 - Jun 30 Curated by art historian Vassiliki Vayenou and local artist Blanka Amezkua, In Broad Daylight featured painting, mixed media and installation by 6 Greek women street artists, 4 of whom traveled to the Bronx for the exhibition and to create murals on 134th Street, Bathgate Avenue, Fordham Road and Houston Street. Cleo43 taught a free mixed-media workshop using non-toxic spray paint on May 26, 2-5pm. Curator Vassiliki Vayenou offered 4 curatorial tours-one public on June 13, 6pm and the other 3 private tours for seniors and students. Local street artist Lady K Fever moderated the Artist Talk on May 23, 6pm with 3 of the exhibiting artists, which was recorded and subsequently posted on BAS SoundCloud. In conclusion there was a film screening of [Pose] Ta Bombe on June 15, 6:30pm. Curatorial Open Call | March 30 - May 12, 2018 BronxArtSpace is reaching out to represent the ideas of its community through an open call for curatorial proposals for a 6-week long exhibition beginning in March 2018.The curatorial proposals will be selected in view of their relevance to Bronx social and political concerns, feasibility, creativity, professional planning as well as the representation of underserved Bronx artists. Curators will need to show prior experience, but preference will be given to emerging curators. Preference will be given to candidates affiliated with the Bronx as well as those who seek to bring attention to emerging and underrepresented local artists. BronxArtSpace will assemble a diverse jury of 3 art professionals, including at least 2 experienced curators to choose one curatorial proposal to be presented in the gallery. The jury will represent the diversity of Bronx Arts organizations. The Open Call seeks to lift new curatorial voices in the field to enable curator development, and be a platform for community-driven programming. BAS has allocated $1000 toward artist and curator honoraria.$0$26,847
