Governance Explanations

Part VI, Line 11B

Before this Form 990 was submitted to the IRS this Form 990 including its schedules and attachments was reviewed by each member of the Nudge board.

Part VI, Line 12C

A financial interest is not necessarily a conflict of interest. The Nudge Ministries Board reviews all material financial transactions and arrangements to assure that no employee or board member has engaged in any transaction that might inappropriately benefit their private interest. PURPOSE: The purpose of this policy is to protect the interest of Nudge Ministries and its tax-exempt status when it is contemplating entering into a transaction or arrangement that might benefit the private interest of a board member or the President. This policy is intended to supplement but not replace any applicable state laws governing conflicts of interest applicable to nonprofit and charitable corporations.

Part VI, Line 15

Compensation & Avoiding Excessive Benefits 1. A voting board member or the President who receives compensation directly or indirectly from Nudge Ministries for services is precluded from voting on matters pertaining to that members compensation. 2. All compensation arrangements shall be reviewed by Nudge Ministries at least every other year to assure that compensation is reasonable and is the result of discussion of the matter at hand. Decisions regarding compensation shall be made only after the board has searched for information regarding compensation received by similarly situated individuals for similar service performed. In the board minutes there will be a description of the process which leads to the compensation decision.

Part VI, Line 19

The Nudge Ministries governing documents conflict of interest policy and financial statements are available on request.

IRS990/Desc0GLOBAL-CHURCH PLANTING IN GHANA Nudge Ministries seeks to bring help and hope to the people of Ghana West Africa. We do this in many ways. - We go into remote villages and provide them with Sawyer water filters. Many African children under the age of four die due to contaminated drinking water. We show them the filter and since they would not understand microbiology we demonstrate how it works. We ask them What happens if a westerner drinks your water? They respond They will get very very sick. Then we say Watch this. The demonstrator pours their very discolored water through the filter into an empty water bottle. The demonstrator drinks the whole bottle in front of the village. We provide large water buckets which are already set up with Sawyer filters. The people line up to receive the water into their containers. - We provide a variety of Bibles to Ghanaians. Many need a Bible in their language. We also provide solar audio Bibles in their language for those who cannot read. - We provide motorcycles to Ghanaian pastors to enable them to get to the people they serve. In each of the two regions where we minister we have one Toyota pickup truck for carrying supplies and people. The pickups also serve as ambulances. - We train our pastors and leaders. For example when people surrender their lives to Jesus Christ they either get into an existing church or they start a church. Every new church adopts an orphan or a widow. - We also believe in ministering intentionally to the next generation of children and adults. So September 7-16 2023 a Nudge team of four U.S. staff and volunteers traveled with two Ghanaian pastors to the far northwest corner of Ghana where they conducted 1 days of training for 21 Ghanaian pastors and a day conference for 17-to-30-year-olds from 3 language groups. Our theme was How to endure in hard times of life. During this trip the Nudge team also visited schools and small village churches in order to encourage students and church members to live a life of Love for God and people and to learn to better serve people with the Love of Christ. Our 2023 expenditures for ministry in Ghana consisted of domestic salaries of $17,278 and domestic vehicle expense of $335 plus the $103,445 detailed in Schedule F.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0REGIONAL-APPALACHIAN TRAIL MINISTRY During ten days in March and April usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays Nudge teams ministered to 370 Thru-hikers who were hiking the 2,197-mile Appalachian Trail through 14 states from Georgia to Maine. This hiking challenge will take 4.5 to 5 months of hiking 7-8 days taking a day off for their body to recoup and then proceeding onward. They will hike 12-14 miles up and down mountains and through the plains and woods each day. We see the hikers on day 4 or 5 of their hike. This Thru-hike is so difficult that by day 3 20% of those who signed up including many from other countries quit and go home. So for those who make it to day 4 where we are set up we start by congratulating them on making it this far. We offer several tables of things for them. We provide the hikers with water which saves them hiking down to the river to get water and then filtering it. Because they burn between 5 and 6 thousand calories a day we have the right kinds of high-calorie foods which are essential. Of course we provide hot beverages like coffee and hot chocolate for those bitterly cold days in the mountains. Where we set up in the North Georgia mountains the temperature can be in the teens and it is often very windy. On the other hand a warm afternoon in April may be 50 or 60 degrees so all the coke-a-cola products are a welcome sight. Due to the temperatures moisture and wind we provide hypothermia-prevention information. Along with that we offer hand knit hats designed to keep them from hiking and sweating which contributes to hypothermia. We also distribute light-load towels to help keep them and their tent dry. The hikers have nicknamed the Nudge van Mary Poppins because we also have with us everything they would find in a pharmacy to treat their soreness and or injuries sunscreen bug bites etc. The hikers are absolutely amazed when they ask if we live locally and we tell them we travel over two hours to serve them. Then they ask how long we will stay waiting for hikers. We tell them that we stay until we are told that no more hikers are coming. Sometimes we are there for 10 hours before we head home. We also let them know from the start that we do not accept donations from anyone who is hiking. If a person persists we tell them to pass on their gift to another hiker. Because we travel so far to serve them and we serve them without asking for money we gain respect and appreciation. That also provides us the opportunity to briefly tell them that we are lovingly serving them because we are living out the example of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We go and love and serve others in Jesus name. Since hikers will not accept a Bible or other literature because of the weight of those items we prepare a list of book titles and we encourage them to take a picture of the list and research it later. Before they leave we let them know that we would love to send them on their way with a one-minute hiker prayer for their safety. We dont pressure them but over 80% respond positively to that prayer invitation. Some just say OK but others say I would love that or I need that.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0LOCAL-FOOD PANTRY AND DISCIPLESHIP Throughout the year 23 volunteers made 9 weekly pickups and transported donated food from two large grocery stores to the Lilburn Cooperative Ministry which works in partnership with Atlanta Food Bank. This year the distributed food was given to an average of 66 families each week. In the year after Hurricane Katrina many people came to Atlanta and the co-op served 116 families weekly. During the 12 years of this ministry Nudge has received and distributed through the Lilburn Co-op food with a retail value of over 5 million dollars. Another part of the ministry is to help local churches. Since our founder Pastor Rich Tuttle was previously a childrens and youth pastor and has been on over 60 mission trips he assists local churches with their mission programs. We often do this by preparing a missions-related Vacation Bible School program for children. We are also involved in mens ministry. If men desire practical ways to live a God-honoring life Pastor Rich meets in person or by Zoom with individuals and groups of four or five. Monthly he attends a breakfast meeting of 20 to 30 where he can encourage these men by sharing his perspective based on the Holy Scriptures.
