Our purpose is to advance a progressive agenda for justice and equity for all Californians by engaging, mobilizing and building the leadership of young voters of color and their families by passing progressive legislation and to a lesser degree, candidate elections.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
PowerCA Action, as part of a statewide coalition, made history when we submitted over 1.7 million signatures, qualifying the Schools and Communities First (SCF) initiative for the November 2020 ballot as Prop. 15. The initiative was intended to close property tax loopholes for corporations and ensure stable funding for California schools and communities. PowerCA Action ran a robust SCF signature gathering program collecting 3,000+ signatures and a youth-led program that collected 1,000+ signatures. We also launched our Vote at 16 statewide campaign to change who gets to participate in our democracy and to ensure that young people start their involvement in the political process at an early age, thus expanding voting rights and ensuring a healthy democracy for generations. We mobilized youth leaders from Los Angeles, Central Valley, Oakland, and Contra Costa schools to lobby 29 state legislators to support CA ACA-8. This bill will place a constitutional amendment on the ballot (to become 2020s Prop. 18) to lower the minimum voting age to 17 in statewide. In partnership with the Oakland Kids First and All City Council Student Union, we launched a Vote at 16 campaign for Oakland schools (to become 2020s Measure QQ). This campaign gained the support of over 100 organizations and elected officials. We ran a Yes on Measure EE campaign in Los Angeles, along with 8 regional partners, in support of passing an educational parcel tax that would bring millions of dollars into Los Angeles Unified School District and advance racial and economic equity. Voters were contacted in 3 languages including English, Spanish and Korean and of the voters contacted, 76% committed to voting Yes on Measure EE. We expanded our field staff capacity and experience to grow to scale for future elections to activate and mobilize young Californians of color and their families to vote. 127,547 voters in LAUSD were contacted with 76% pledging to vote Yes on Measure EE (Local School Funding Measure in LAUSD) and 1,017 volunteers mobilized to motivate voters to vote Yes on Measure EE.--
