Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Cancer commons is a nonprofit that provides patients, caregivers, and treating physicians with actionable information to support informed treatment decisions, along with direct-to-patient navigation services for individuals with cancer and their caregivers.

Cancer Commons, by design, is a neutral, patient-centric non-profit clearinghouse that encourages knowledge and data sharing by individual patients and physicians as well as non-profit, commercial, and government entities. We use information technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and crowdsourcing to help patients and physicians make the best possible decisions, and continually learn from each patient's results.

IRS990/Desc0Cancer Commons provides patient services through its Ask Cancer Commons platform, and through patient content (news, blogs, etc.). Ask Cancer Commons is a web-based service that connects patients with knowledgeable experts in our network, who provide the patients with personalized treatment options, including referrals to top local physicians and to clinical trials. The treatment recommendations and the reasoning that supports them are captured in a registry, along with the patient's clinical history and results. Each case builds on this collective knowledge, enabling more accurate, personalized options for the next community member. Moreover, by continuously learning from the experiences of every participating patient and physician, and immediately applying that knowledge to inform treatment decisions, the Cancer Commons network can explore and optimize the use of available therapies, off-label and in multi-drug therapeutic regimens, far more efficiently than traditional trials. This year, we quadrupled the capacity of our Ask Cancer Commons service. To date, we have helped several thousand patients, throughout the US and in 43 other countries, with all forms of cancer, find new options and hope, and rest assured that no stone has been left unturned. The service is free, made possible by philanthropic support. Demand continues to build, driven almost exclusively by patient referrals on social media, and is now straining the capacity of our current, mostly manual processes. Cancer Commons also develops original patient content and curates third-party publications, news, blog posts, and resources to educate patients and physicians about the latest scientific and clinical findings. This content is made available through our website as well as through social media. In 2016-17, over 3,000 cancer treatment insights and alerts to trials, drug approvals and other actionable developments were generated and disseminated. Patients can also share their clinical data and personal experiences to help other patients learn what patients like them did, how well the treatments worked, and what might be expected during and after treatment.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0To scale Ask Cancer Commons, we are growing our network of physicians and scientists, and developing a knowledge sharing platform to continuously learn from every case. The network will soon include molecular tumor boards at elite cancer centers, where the most challenging cases are discussed. Discussions are underway with Yale, UCSD, Stanford, Penn, UCSF, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Northwestern. Knowledge sharing will initially focus on specific cancer verticals, starting with brain cancer, to quickly amass enough cases to cover the major molecular subtypes and treatment options. This will enable us to move to a technology-driven self-service model where patients and their caregivers can search for cases similar to theirs, and use the treatment recommendations, rationales, and clinical experiences of those patients to inform their own decisions. Each patient then reports what they did and how it worked, to help future patients. This rapid learning approach leverages the personalized research done for one patient to help many others, and uses the experiences of all patients to continuously validate and refine the experts' knowledge. Of course, new patients who require personalized assistance, or who have special needs, will still be able to consult with experts in the Cancer Commons network, and these answers, too, will be integrated into the knowledge base. In 2017, we developed all of the necessary software to support this rapid learning process, including a patient registry, a data repository, and a decision support app. These components capture the expert treatment recommendations from the physicians in our network and use these to identify the best trials, treatments, and combination therapies for future patients. The recommendations are continuously validated and refined based on each patient's results. We're currently piloting this continuous learning process in glioblastoma multiform (GBM), the deadliest form of brain cancer. By the end of 2018, we expect to be advising and learning from more than 100 patients per month. In collaboration with the Musella Foundation, we are also in discussions with the FDA on ways to accelerate the approval of promising investigational drugs for deadly cancers where there are no effective treatments. With their encouragement, we are preparing a bold proposal to allow advanced cancer patients to be treated with such experimental drugs, provided they participate in our patient registry to capture their treatments, outcomes and side-effects.
