| IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom | 0 | Talking Writing, a free online literary magazine for writers, is the primary activity of Talking Writing, Inc. Six issues of the magazine were published in 2012. Each ran for two months and included personal essays, opinion pieces, fiction, poetry, author interviews, regular columns, and work by visual artists. The January/February issue, titled "Gatekeepers: What's Holding You Back?," offered essays by editors, writers, and literary agents on the trials and tribulations of getting published, as well as a spotlight on math poetry. The March/April issue, "Public vs. Private: Exposing Ourselves," addressed the benefits and perils for writers of expressing themselves through blogs, social media, and other online venues. The May/June issue, "Words vs. Images: Evoking a Sense of Place," included personal essays on locales from Singapore to Martha's Vineyard, along with an expressive series of images by each of four visual artists. In July and August, Talking Writing published weekly collections of archival material on various themes under the general heading of "Vacation Reading at TW." The September/October issue, "Seven Writerly Sins," featured a series of essays addressing the impact on each author of a sin such as sloth, gluttony, or hoarding, along with related artwork. In the November/December issue, titled "50 Shades of Adaptation," writers and artists explored mixed media in many variations, from film adaptations of books to a poet's visual collages. Well-known writers interviewed in Talking Writing in 2012 included Robert Olen Butler, Julia Scheeres, Susie Bright, William Giraldi, Richard Zimler, Nichole Bernier, and Jo Miller. At the beginning of 2012, Talking Writing averaged 4,000 readers per month. The magazine had 500 email and RSS subscribers, 550 Twitter followers, and 450 Facebook fans. By the end of the year, Talking Writing had more than doubled its audience, to 10,000 monthly readers. It had close to 800 email and RSS subscribers, over 1,000 Twitter followers, and 640 Facebook fans. |
| IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom | 1 | The annual conference of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) is the largest literary event in North America. At the 2012 conference in Chicago, held February 29-March 3, Talking Writing was represented by Marketing Director Gayle Syska and Executive Editor Elizabeth Langosy. The conference drew 10,700 attendees, 600 exhibitors, and 430 events. Elizabeth and Gayle spent the majority of their time in the exhibition hall, with the goal of generating interest in Talking Writing's offerings for the writing community, all available at no charge. Small presses and literary magazines were approached as colleagues with whom to share new writers and information on best practices. Writing programs and workshops were introduced to Talking Writing as a possible publishing venue for their students and as a source of articles on writing for use in the classroom. Five hundred informational postcards were distributed to writers, directors of writing programs, and small press and magazine editors. |
| IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom | 2 | In August 2012, Talking Writing announced its first annual writing contest, offering prizes for fiction and for nature writing. The goals of the annual contest are to celebrate the diversity online of original, personally driven writing and to acknowledge and support writers from all backgrounds and at all stages of their careers. Fourteen nature writing submissions and ten fiction submissions were received. Entrants paid a $15 fee for each submission, garnering $360 for Talking Writing. These funds defrayed the costs of contest advertising and administration. The contest winners were announced in November 2012. The Talking Writing Prize for Short Fiction, judged by David Cameron, was awarded to David Meischen for "Agua Dulce." The Talking Writing Prize for Nature Writing, judged by Steven Lewis, was awarded to John Gredler for "Glistening Scar." Both prizewinners received publication of the winning work in Talking Writing and free registration for the AWP conference held in Boston in March 2013. |
