Educational and civic engagement by providing students, facility, college employees, and the community at large, a forum and center for learning and scholarly public discourse on key civic matters which may be local, regional, national, or international in scope and impact.

Part III Line 4 - accomplishments continued: Outside of election-related issues, the Institute presented a forum on reform of the Florida criminal justice system, the sixth in a continuing series in partnership with the Project on Accountable Justice. Racial justice was the focus of two other public forums. One titled Making Democracy Work featured CNN analyst and civil rights advocate Bakari Sellers. The second was a program titled Then and Now: the Changing Face of Jim Crow and Racial Justice, which featured a screening of a documentary film and conversation with filmmaker creator, Clennon King. For student engagement with the political process, the Institute again sponsored The Great Debate, a competition at five of the college's campuses that gave students a chance to study key policy issues while developing their research, writing and presentation skills. The Institute also staged a special lecture and conversation for students with our March Forum Series speaker Clennon King. Dinner Series: The Dinner Series presented four programs on topical issues. They were: Guns in America: Myth-Busting in Search of a Solution in partnership with the Poynter Institute; Fake News: Seeking Truth in a Post-Factual World; Healing America: The Case for Social Democracy, with Dr. Philip Kotler, and #MeToo and Men: The Case for Due Process. Partnerships and Special Projects: The Institute partnered with other public or non-profit organizations to stage programs benefitting students and the public. The fifth annual Caregivers Conference is a partnership with Maria's Adult Day Care Center and AARP Florida. The Age-Friendly City initiative is a partnership with AARP Florida, the Area Agency on Aging of Pinellas-Pasco, and the City of St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation Department. The Institute served as a hosting partner for the Juvenile Welfare Board's annual Children's Summit, and for Pinellas County Economic Development - Small Business Development Center's Reverse Trade Show. The Institute continued to build on the Sea Level Rise initiative, with a screening of the documentary film Chasing Ice in partnership with the SPC Department of Natural Science and STEM Center. And also part of this initiative was a forum on the health impacts of climate change, in partnership with Physicians for Social Responsibility.

IRS990/Desc0The Institute for Strategic Policy Solutions at St. Petersburg College provides a forum to help people deal with the uncertainty around them. Housed on the Seminole Campus, the Institute seeks to be a major participant in public policy debate. The Institute addresses real-world problems and the needs of the community served by St. Petersburg College in a strategic and technologically savvy way. The Institute also prepares its students for careers in a global marketplace and builds on SPC's reputation as a source of innovation, academic excellence and community involvement. The Institute works with local governments to improve communication and collaboration. The goal is to advance the level of professionalism among local elected officials. The Institute also promotes efficiencies and professionalism among various units of government and seeks to improve the quality of overall government leadership. By raising awareness, the Institute hopes to increase citizens' participation in government- from informed voting to attending government meetings to running for office. The Institute is a leading center for discussion of key policy issues on topical issues that are difficult to resolve. For example, the Institute has hosted recent forums on federal health care and the impact of the Gulf oil spill on Tampa Bay. The Institute seeks to identify key economic activities in Pinellas County and the Tampa Bay area that best fit with the college's programs. It focuses on becoming a center of excellence for that economic development. Target areas include workforce training, enabling business development and sustainable practices including renewable energy and green building standards. Designated as a center serving the entire Florida College System, the Institute addresses issues with state and national impact.
